Born Vishal Veeru Devgan on April 2, 1969, in New Delhi, Ajay Devgn is the son of renowned action choreographer and stuntman Veeru Devgan and his wife Veena Devgan.

He grew up in a film-centric environment in Mumbai, which made his entry into Bollywood almost inevitable.

However, unlike many star kids who debuts with romantic roles, Ajay burst onto the scene in 1991 with Phool Aur Kaante, where he made a now-legendary entry standing astride two moving motorcycles.

Over the years, he shed the “action hero” tag to become one of the most nuanced actors of his generation, known for his minimalist dialogue delivery and maximum impact.

Off-screen, he is famously reserved, a family man married to actress Kajol, and a hands-on father to their two children.

    Siblings

Ajay has two younger siblings – a sister, Neelam Devgn, and a brother, Anil Devgn.

However, unlike the Bollywood families that frequently appear in tabloids, Ajay’s siblings have remained deliberately out of the limelight, a testament to the family’s preference for privacy.

Neelam is the elder of the two younger siblings.

She maintains a low profile and is rarely seen at industry events, choosing instead to lead a life away from the paparazzi’s glare.

Anil, Ajay’s younger brother, has occasionally been spotted in the peripheral circles of the film industry, but he has never pursued acting as a career.

    Career

After his explosive debut in 1991, he quickly became the poster boy for action films, delivering hits like Jigar, Dilwale, and Suhaag.

However, the mid-90s saw him pivot dramatically, proving his mettle in dramatic and romantic roles.

His portrayal of a troubled lover in Ishq and the intense, brooding hero in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam opposite Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai, showcased his ability to hold his ground in ensemble casts.

The new millennium marked a significant turning point. While many of his contemporaries struggled to transition to edgier content, Ajay thrived.

He delivered a powerhouse performance as the gangster Malik in Ram Gopal Varma’s Company, a role that earned him critical acclaim and established him as a serious actor.

He followed this with Gangaajal, where he played a fiery police officer, and The Legend of Bhagat Singh, where he portrayed the revolutionary freedom fighter with haunting sincerity.

Not one to be pigeonholed, Ajay mastered comedy with the Golmaal franchise, proving that his deadpan expressions were just as effective for laughter as they were for anger.

As a producer and director, he pushed boundaries with films like U Me Aur Hum and Shivaay, the latter of which he also directed and starred in, showcasing his prowess in action and VFX-heavy storytelling.

In recent years, his portrayal of the Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior became one of the highest-grossing films of his career, cementing his status as a bankable star who could carry a period drama on his shoulders.

His 2024 release, Singham Again, further solidified his position as the undisputed king of the cop-action universe.

    Accolades

Over the course of his career, Devgn has amassed a treasure trove of awards that reflect his range and consistency.

He has won two National Film Awards for Best Actor, a feat that places him among the elite of Indian cinema.

His first National Award came for his riveting performance as the titular revolutionary in The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), where he captured the fiery zeal and tragic fate of the young martyr.

His second National Award was for his portrayal of a tough, morally ambiguous police officer in Gangaajal (2003), proving that his intensity was unmatched.

Beyond the National Awards, he has received numerous Filmfare Awards, including a Critics’ Award for Best Actor for Company.

He has also been honored with Filmfare awards for his comedic timing in the Golmaal series and for his role in the critically acclaimed Omkara, where he played the menacing Langda Tyagi.

In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his contributions to the arts.

Furthermore, his work as a producer and director has also been recognized, with his production house, Ajay Devgn FFilms, producing content that has won awards at various international film festivals.
