Andrew Balbirnie is an Irish professional cricketer born on 28 December 1990 in Dublin, Ireland.

A right-handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper who also bowls right-arm off-break, he has been a mainstay of the Ireland national team across formats since his international debut.

Educated at St. Andrew’s College in Dublin, he progressed through Ireland’s age-group and Under-19 systems, captaining the side at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup.

He was one of the eleven players who featured in Ireland’s inaugural Test match against Pakistan in May 2018 at Malahide.

Balbirnie later served as captain of the Ireland side in all three formats and remains the Test captain.

He has also played domestic and franchise cricket for sides including Middlesex, Glamorgan, Leinster Lightning and Khulna Tigers.

    Siblings

Andrew is one of three sons of Ashley Balbirnie and Candy Lappin. His two brothers are Harry and Jack Balbirnie.

The family moved to Sandymount in Dublin when the boys were young and lived close to a cricket ground, which helped foster a shared love of the game.

All three brothers played cricket growing up, and their parents regularly attended their matches.

    Career

Balbirnie made his One Day International debut for Ireland against Scotland on 5 July 2010.

After a period of limited opportunities he established himself as a reliable top-order batsman from around 2014 onward.

He debuted in T20 Internationals against Scotland in June 2015 and played in Ireland’s first Test against Pakistan in May 2018.

Appointed captain in all formats in November 2019, he led the side until stepping down from limited-overs captaincy in July 2023 while retaining the Test leadership.

Notable performances include an ODI century of 113 that helped Ireland defeat England in 2020, a century against South Africa that contributed to Ireland’s first ODI win over that side in 2021, and a half-century that guided Ireland to a famous T20 World Cup victory over England in 2022.

In March 2024 he captained Ireland to their first-ever Test win, against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.

Domestically he has represented Middlesex (2011–2015), Cardiff MCCU, Leinster Lightning and briefly Glamorgan.

Across formats he has accumulated thousands of international runs, multiple ODI centuries and consistent contributions as a senior batsman and leader for Ireland.

    Accolades

Balbirnie captained Ireland to their first ODI victory over South Africa in 2021 and to a memorable T20 World Cup win against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2022.

Under his Test captaincy Ireland secured their maiden Test victory against Afghanistan in 2024.

He has scored multiple ODI centuries, including notable knocks against England and South Africa, and reached significant run milestones such as 2,000 ODI runs.

He was part of the Ireland side that won the 2010 ICC World Cricket League Division One and featured in Ireland’s first Test match.
