The Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay has called on the authorities of Cameroon to investigate the death in detention of broadcast journalist Samuel Wazizi who had been imprisoned since August 2, 2019. Wazizi was arrested for criticising the government’s handling of a separatist revolt and died while still in detention in mysterious circumstances. Kenya has defeated Djibouti in the race for the non-permanent seat at the United Nations (UN) Security Council in the just concluded vote. This means that the two will go for another election scheduled for tomorrow since nether Djibouti nor Kenya secured the two thirds majority to win the seat. Kenya was ahead with votes, 113 to 78. Safaricom has announced five hours of M-Pesa services outage of Thursday, June 18 as from 0000hours to 0500ahours in routine maintenance. In a statement, Safaricom announced that during this time, all M-Pesa services including airtime purchase will not be available. “Our M-Pesa services shall be undergoing planned maintenance on the morning of Thursday 18th June 2020, between 0000 hrs and 0500 hrs. The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has commenced investigations into the bank accounts of the Tuskys Supermarket over Ksh1.2 billion owed to suppliers, even as its shelves start to run empty. According to media reports, the chain retailer has been under probe since April, when suppliers reported to the regulator that the it has not been paying them. At least 200 Chinese Nationals who have been residing in Kenya left the country yesterday at night at around 11pm, even as the fear for contracting Covid-19 escalates. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has denied claims that there is an increase in electricity prices in the month of June 2020. In a statement, EPRA says that it reviewed the base energy charge rates in July 2018 and these rates have not been changed to date. “Each month, EPRA computes and gazettes the applicable pass through parameters i.e. Fuel Energy Cost (FEC), Forex Adjustment (FOREX ADJ.) and Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA) levy and reviews the Inflation Adjustment biannually.
