US President Donald Trump said American warplanes bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. “Remember, there are many targets left. Tonight was the most difficult of them all by far, and perhaps the most lethal,” the president said in a brief televised address to the American people. “But if peace doesn’t come quickly we will go to those other targets with precision, speed and skill.” One of the targets was Fordo, a uranium enrichment plant hidden in a remote mountainside that is vital to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. We do…
Hundreds of journalists for Voice of America (VOA) – most of its remaining staff – have been fired by President Donald Trump’s administration, effectively shutting down the US-funded news outlet. The administration said the layoffs were because the agency was “riddled with dysfunction, bias and waste”. Steve Herman, VOA’s chief national correspondent, called the dismantling of the outlet, which was set up during World War Two to counter Nazi propaganda, a “historic act of self-sabotage”. Among those axed were Persian-language reporters who had been on administrative leave, but were called back to work last week after Israel attacked Iran. According…
The United States struck three sites in Iran early Sunday, inserting itself into Israel ’s war aimed at destroying the country’s nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe despite fears of a wider regional conflict. Addressing the nation from the White House, President Donald Trump asserted that Iran’s key nuclear were “completely and fully obliterated.” There was no independent damage assessment. It was not clear whether the U.S. would continue attacking Iran alongside its ally Israel, which has been engaged in a nine-day war with Iran. Trump acted without congressional authorization, and he warned that there…

The High Court declared Section 29(c) of the Law of Succession Act unconstitutional, citing gender-based discrimination against widowers. High Court judge Justice Lawrence Mugambi ruled that the provision—which requires a husband to prove he was dependent on his deceased wife in order to qualify as a beneficiary of her estate—violates the Constitution’s guarantees of equality and non-discrimination. The ruling sets a critical precedent in aligning Kenya’s succession laws with constitutional standards on gender equality and may trigger broader reforms in inheritance law. This is after a case was filed by a man identified as the husband of the late Caroline…

ICE denied that its agents were at the stadium. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees…

The founder of instant messaging app Telegram, Pavel Durov, says the more than 100 children he has fathered will share his estimated $13.9bn (£10.3bn) fortune. “They are all my children and will all have the same rights! I don’t want them to tear each other apart after my death,” Mr Durov told French political magazine Le Point. Mr Durov said he was the “official father” of six children by three different partners, but the clinic “where I started donating sperm fifteen years ago to help a friend, told me that more than 100 babies had been conceived this way in…

The M23 rebels have controlled the area since mid-2024 and charge a tax of…
M-PESA, Safaricom’s flagship mobile money platform, has witnessed a fourfold increase in usage over the last five years, a growth largely attributed to strategic pricing changes introduced during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Reflecting on his five-year tenure at the helm of Safaricom, CEO Dr Peter Ndegwa highlighted how the zero-rating of select transactions during the pandemic played a pivotal role in transforming user behavior and expanding the platform’s reach. In response to a directive by the Central Bank of Kenya at the height of the pandemic, Safaricom scrapped charges on transactions below Sh1,000 and transfers between bank accounts and…

The High Court dismissed a petition by Athanas Wafula Wamunyinyi challenging the leasing of Nzoia Sugar Company. This clears the way for West Kenya Sugar Company—a subsidiary of the Rai Group—to proceed with its Sh5.76 billion investment in the struggling miller. In a judgment delivered virtually by Justice Lawrence Mugambi, the court upheld preliminary objections filed by the State and other parties, ruling that Wamunyinyi’s petition was res judicata (already adjudicated). This was a relief to the government officials pushing for the leasing of the factories in the country. The court found that the issues raised—particularly the alleged lack of…
