A boat carrying scores of passengers capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo on Thursday, killing at least 50 people, witnesses said.  It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were on board or how many perished but witnesses said they saw rescue services recover at least 50 bodies from the water. Detectives have found the body of a female taxi driver at the City Mortuary in Nairobi.  Taxi driver Victoria Mumbua Muloki, who went missing a week ago was found dead. Her relatives positively identified her body at City Mortuary on Thursday October 3 in an emotional session. The body was recovered from Lari area, Kiambu county about 450 kilometers away from where she went missing. Muloki went missing on September 27 from Mombasa where she operated. The High Court Thursday suspended the new funding model for higher education that requires the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to apportion loans to students based on their needs.  Justice Chacha Mwita issued the order following a petition filed by the Kenya Human Rights Commission and Elimu Bora Working Group. “Conservatory orders are issued against the respondents from implementing the new education funding model until hearing and determination of the petition,” said the Judge. The Commandant Kenya Military Academy (KMA) MaJ Gen Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu retired from the Kenya Defence Forces after he attained the mandatory retirement age in the military. Detectives are investigating murder in a case where a 32 year old man died after being assaulted by people known to him in an altercation in Donholm, Nairobi. Police in Maralal town, Samburu County are investigating an incident in which a businesswoman was robbed of Sh800,000. The woman who operates an electronic and M-pesa shop in Kisma Trading Centre told police she was closing the establishment when a group of six men, two armed with firearms and others with crude weapons forced their way in. Police are investigating a tragic incident in which a teacher at the Kenya High School in Nairobi was found dead after a suspected suicide. According to police the case was among five reported to police in a worrying trend. Police said they were called and informed of the incident on Wednesday October 2 after the body had been found. A doctor charged in the drug-related death of actor Matthew Perry has pleaded guilty in the case.  Dr Mark Chavez changed his plea to guilty in a Los Angeles court to a charge of conspiring to distribute the surgical anaesthetic ketamine. Chavez, 54, operated a ketamine clinic and sold ketamine lozenges to Dr Salvador Plasencia, who supplied them to Perry, the star of NBC sitcom Friends. Chavez is one of five people charged in Perry’s death. The 54-year-old actor was found dead in his backyard jacuzzi in southern California in October 2023. Israel’s military says eight of its soldiers were killed in combat in southern Lebanon, its first losses since the start of the ground invasion against the armed group Hezbollah.
