UK  immigration enforcement teams made over 600 arrests in January, a 73 percent increase on the same period a year ago, as part of the new Labour government’s plan to tackle undocumented migration and people smuggling gangs, officials said on Monday. The 609 arrests, compared to 352 in January 2024, were made during visits to over 800 premises including nail bars, restaurants, car washes and convenience stores, a government statement said. Police authorities are investigating an incident where their colleagues raided a private residence of a woman while searching for Sh20 million that had allegedly been stolen from a senator. The raid took place at a private residence of a woman in Kamulu, Nairobi County. The woman told police she and Turkana Senator James Lomenen are estranged. Police are investigating an incident in which a man with a history of epilepsy was found in a trench of water in Southlands area, Siaya Town. Police said they found the body of Elphis Odhiambo, 25 lying on the roadside after the incident at the weekend. It was established that the deceased who is epileptic was walking on the road towards town when he is suspected to have convulsed and fell on a nearby trench that had water and he drowned. A landslide in China’s southwestern Sichuan province triggered by heavy rain has killed at least one person, with nearly 30 more missing, state media said Sunday. China has been hit with extreme weather in recent months, with dozens of people killed in floods last year, its warmest on record. The Government plans to increase the number of people hired to clean Nairobi rivers by 30,000 starting next month. This means that a total of 50,000 people – mainly the youth and women – will be cleaning a 47 kilometer stretch of rivers passing through the city, including Nairobi, Mathare and Ngong’ Rivers.
