There was a tragedy at a village when a man was killed after an electric pole crashed on him as he illegally connected power supply in a village in Garissa County. Police said a second man who was with the deceased was seriously injured after the pole crashed on them in Bulla Sagare. Members of Parliament from both sides of the divide have renewed their call to censure National Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u over the delayed disbursement of NG-CDF. Masked gunmen have broken into a live television studio in Ecuador and threatened terrified staff. Employees were forced on to the floor during the broadcast by the public television channel TC in the city of Guayaquil before the live feed cut out. The attackers were later seen leaving the studio, reportedly with several hostages. Police have made arrests. The Private Security Regulatory Authority has ordered a mandatory nationwide vetting, training and licensing of bouncers. Also targeted are events security and other security personnel in entertainment, recreational and sporting establishments. This follows a series of incidents where the targeted personnel were involved with their supposed-to-be clients. One of the conditions will include having the targeted group join associations before they are hired. They will now be required to join registered agencies that will be used in hiring and training before they are deployed. Safaricom’s mobile phone-based money transfer service, payments and micro-financing service, M-Pesa is back. The money transfer service was hit with a delay which began at around 11:00 am on the M-PESA app and Sim Toolkit. Customers who attempted to make transactions received a notification that read; “MPESA is experiencing delays, and is not able to accept your request. Please wait for 10 minutes before trying again.” Others received a notification that read: “Dear customer, MPESA is currently undergoing maintenance and is unable to process your request. Alleged fake lawyer Brian Mwenda Njagi has been ordered to appear at the Muthaiga police station by Tuesday noon following a warrant of arrest issued late last year. Safaricom’s mobile phone-based money transfer service, payments and micro-financing service, M-Pesa is currently down. Thousands of Kenyans who use the service for day-to-day payments are currently stranded. The service is unavailable on the M-Pesa app, USSD code, and SIM card tool. Many have launched complaints with the telco for not notifying them of the downtime. South Korea passed a new law, which aims to end the slaughter and selling of dogs for their meat by 2027. The law aims to end the centuries-old practice of eating dog meat. Dog meat has fallen out of favour with diners over the past few decades. Young people especially shun it. Under the law, raising or slaughtering dogs for consumption will be banned, as will distributing or selling dog meat. Those found guilty of doing so could be sent to jail. Police are investigating an incident in which a girl aged eight years drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel in Nakuru County. The girl was in the company of her siblings at the Kunste Hotel Nakuru’s swimming pool on January 6 when she drowned. Police and the hotel management said other siblings therein realized she had drowned and was motionless before raising an alarm. The hotel’s personnel were alerted and administered first aid before rushing her to Nairobi Women’s Hospital Nakuru where she was attended and later pronounced dead. President William Ruto has revoked four appointments to the board of Kenya Railways Corporation. In a gazette notice, the head of state quashed the appointment of Alawi Hussun, Dennis Aroka, Catherine Musakali and Sumaiya Salim Mohamed, effective immediately. Reason for revocation was not given.
