US inflation cooled off at the wholesale level as businesses’ margins took a big hit in August, new data showed Wednesday. Producer prices unexpectedly fell 0.1% in August, cooling annual inflation to 2.6% from a downwardly revised 3.1% in July, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Helping to drive prices lower was a 1.7% drop in trade services, a category reflective of producers, wholesalers and retailers’ profit margins. If margins are shrinking, it could be an indication that businesses are using those to eat higher costs, economists have said. The trade services category can be highly volatile; however, August’s…

ABC is trying something a little bit different with the new season of “The Bachelorette.” Instead of going with one of the runner-ups from a past season of “The Bachelor,” the network is borrowing from another reality series. This time around, participants will be vying for the heart of Taylor Frankie Paul, who is one of the stars of the Hulu series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.” The 31-year-old Utah native is a single mother of three who came to fame as one of the breakout stars of “MomTok” in which a group of young mothers would get together…
The first of five Supreme Court justices who will decide the fate of the former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has found the ex-leader guilty of plotting a coup. But Bolsonaro will only be convicted if at least three out of the five justices find him guilty. Justice Alexandre de Moraes said there was “no doubt” that there had been a coup attempt after Bolsonaro lost the 2022 presidential election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Moraes also said that Bolsonaro had led the “criminal organisation” which he alleged was behind the attempted coup. Bolsonaro has denied all…
A US congressional panel released a redacted copy of an alleged “birthday book” given to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003 celebrating his fiftieth birthday. The book was released with a trove of documents that include the late convicted paedophile financier’s will and his personal address book – with contacts that include royalty, politicians across the globe, celebrities and models. The 238-page book contains messages and photos sent by many of Epstein’s friends, including a letter carrying a signature resembling US President Donald Trump’s. Trump has denied ever writing the birthday note. Epstein, a well-connected financier and convicted sex offender, was found…
The US economy added 911,000 fewer jobs than initial estimates had suggested in the year through March, according to preliminary data from the Labor Department released on Tuesday. The routine annual report – a revision to payrolls data – showed that the jobs market had been growing at a slower pace than previously thought at the end of the Biden administration and in the first months of the Trump administration. Economists had anticipated a large downward revision, but the weaker-then-expected figure bolstered concerns about the health of the world’s largest economy. The Federal Reserve is closely watching for signs of…
President Emmanuel Macron has named close ally Sébastien Lecornu as new French prime minister, 24 hours after a vote of confidence ousted François Bayrou as head of his government. Lecornu, 39, was among the favourites to take over the job, and has spent the past three years as armed forces minister, with a focus on France’s response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. In a statement the Elysée Palace said he had been given the task of consulting political parties with the aim of adopting France’s next budget. Bayrou had visited the president hours earlier to hand in his resignation, paving…

Goalkeeper Brian Bwire replaced Byrne Omondi between the posts, while Ronney Onyango retained his place at right back. With Aboud Omar suspended, Manzur Okwaro slotted into his natural left-back position — a welcome adjustment after his impressive CHAN 2024 performances as a defensive midfielder. At the heart of defence,…

Kenya is ready to sign a power purchase agreement with Ethiopia to uptake reserve power from the 6,450 megawatts Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), President William Ruto has said. Ruto said with Kenya’s peak demand exceeding 2,300MW and continuing to rise, this additional capacity would strengthen the country’s reserve margin and reduce supply deficits. He pointed out that, beyond affordability, the clean and stable supply would enhance grid reliability, particularly during droughts when hydropower output is volatile. “Reliability is especially critical for special economic zones, industrial parks, ICT hubs, and agro-processing facilities, all of which require consistent and affordable power…

The vastness of the building site was at first overwhelming for the young Ethiopian mechanical engineer. Hundreds were already digging the foundations in tough conditions for what is now Africa’s largest hydro-electric dam, straddling the Blue Nile. Moges Yeshiwas was 27 when he arrived in that remote corner of western Ethiopia in 2012, eager to gain valuable experience in his profession. The completion of the project is set to change his nation, but it also changed his life. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed formally…
