An Ethiopian court has ordered release of Kenyan journalist Yassin Juma from police custody. In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, the court also granted Ethiopia’s OMN journalist Melese Diribsa and three co-detainees bail. According to the defense team, the court ordered their release after police failed to present evidence to prove they committed a crime. The Employment and Labour Relations Court on Wednesday ordered reinstated Nairobi County Assembly Clerk Jacob Ngwele to step aside from his position pending the hearing and determination of his case challenging the appointment of Edward Gichana as his replacement. Justice Maureen Onyango directed Deputy Clerk Adah Onyango to take over Ngwele’s functions pending judgment in October. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a security guard accused of breaking into a foreign High Commissioner’s residence and stealing valuables. According to the DCI, Brian Mbache Libasi was traced to his hideout at Mwembeni area in Kibra. Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has said that hotels are allowed to sell alcohol to their guests but in their rooms. While issuing a clarification on the ban of alcohol sale announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta on July 27, the CS, however, maintained that hotels are not allowed to serve alcohol to clients sitting in a public space. The Kenyan senate has suspended physical meetings for one month as part of efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus. Senate Speaker Keneth Lusaka told the Standard that during the period all committee meetings will be held virtually as the house checks the spread of the virus. “We had a liaison committee meeting, which has all the chairpersons of committees, and agreed that all meetings should be held virtually,” said Lusaka. Two people died and six others injured at the port of Mombasa on Friday after a fertiliser silo bin fell on them. The accident is said to have occurred at about 5.10 pm at the Portside Freight Container Station, which is owned by Governor Hassan Joho’s family. A police report identified the deceased as 44-year-old James Mwangi Gathendo and 35-year-old machine operator Vikash Singh. The Ministry of Health has confirmed 723 new cases of Covid-19 after testing 8,679 samples in the last 24 hours. This now raises the number of infections reported in the country so far to 20,636. The new cases include 700 Kenyans and 23 foreigners with the youngest patient being a 9-months-old baby and the oldest 87 years. The Postal Corporation of Kenya also known as Posta Kenya and the Immigration Department today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see the former deliver passports directly to applicants. The MoU was signed by Post Master General Dan Kagwe and Immigration boss Alexander Muteshi. Safaricom shareholders on Thursday approved dividend payout of Ksh1.40 per share up from Ksh1.25 paid in 2019. In a statement, the leading telecommunication company in the country said the disbursement, which is equivalent to 80 per cent of its normalized earnings, is a 12 per cent increase from last year.
