    Bob Stoops Salary

Bob Stoops earned some of the highest salaries in college football during his time at Oklahoma.

At the peak of his career with the Sooners, Stoops had a base salary of approximately $5.5 million per year. Performance bonuses could increase his annual compensation to between $6 million and $7 million.

His long-term success at Oklahoma made him one of the most highly paid coaches in college football. His compensation reflected his record, national championship and consistent appearances in major bowl games.

    Early Life

Bob Stoops was born on September 9, 1960, in Youngstown, Ohio. He was one of six children born to Ron and Evelyn Stoops.

Football was an important part of the Stoops family. Bob and his brothers Ron Jr., Mike and Mark were coached by their father during their high school years.

Stoops attended Cardinal Mooney High School before enrolling at the University of Iowa. He played college football for the Hawkeyes as a defensive back from 1979 to 1982.

During his final season at Iowa, Stoops was named the team’s MVP. His experience as a player later helped shape his approach to coaching, particularly on the defensive side of the game.

    Coaching Career

After graduating from Iowa in 1983, Stoops began his coaching career with the Hawkeyes. He worked as a volunteer coach and graduate assistant before moving to Kent State University as an assistant football coach.

Stoops later joined Kansas State University as a defensive backs coach. He eventually became the school’s co-defensive coordinator.

His work at Kansas State helped transform a struggling football program. During his final four seasons with the Wildcats, the team posted a 35-12 record and made three bowl appearances.

Stoops left Kansas State in 1995 to join the University of Florida. He worked under head coach Steve Spurrier as the Gators’ defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

At Florida, Stoops helped the team achieve major success. The Gators won the 1997 Sugar Bowl, further raising his profile as a college football coach.

    Oklahoma Head Coach

In 1999, Stoops was hired as the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma.

He immediately helped change the direction of the Sooners’ program. In his first season, Oklahoma reached its first bowl game in five years.

The following season became the defining moment of Stoops’ career.

    2000 National Championship

The 2000 season was one of the most successful in Oklahoma football history.

Under Stoops, the Sooners finished the season undefeated and won the BCS National Championship. The championship established Stoops as one of the leading coaches in college football.

His performance earned him several major coaching awards. He was named Walter Camp Coach of the Year, AP Coach of the Year, Home Depot Coach of the Year and Big 12 Coach of the Year. He also won the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award.

Stoops continued to produce strong seasons at Oklahoma after the national championship.

In 2003, he won his second Walter Camp Coach of the Year award and another Big 12 Coach of the Year award. He also received the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award.

    Oklahoma’s Success Under Bob Stoops

Stoops remained at Oklahoma for 18 seasons, making him one of the longest-serving and most successful coaches in the program’s history.

During his tenure, the Sooners posted a combined 191-48 record. Stoops became the winningest coach in Oklahoma history.

Oklahoma also made several appearances in the BCS National Championship Game during his tenure. The Sooners returned to the title game in 2004 and again in 2005. They made another appearance in 2009, tying Florida State’s record for BCS National Championship Game appearances.

One of Stoops’ notable achievements came in 2014, when Oklahoma won the Sugar Bowl. The victory made Stoops the first and only coach at the time to win all four BCS bowl games while also winning a BCS National Championship.

His 2008 Oklahoma team also set a major offensive record. The Sooners scored 716 points during the season, making them the highest-scoring team in college football history at the time.

    Retire From Oklahoma

After 18 seasons leading the Sooners, Stoops announced his retirement from college coaching in 2017.

He was succeeded by Lincoln Riley, who had served as Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Although Stoops had stepped away from full-time coaching, he remained connected to Oklahoma football.

In 2021, Riley left Oklahoma to become the head coach at USC. Stoops then returned to Oklahoma as interim head coach for the Sooners’ Alamo Bowl game.

Oklahoma won the game, giving Stoops another victory on the sidelines of the program he had led for nearly two decades.

    Bob Stoops and the XFL

Stoops returned to coaching in professional football in 2019 when he was named head coach and general manager of the XFL’s Dallas Renegades.

His time with the team was cut short when the XFL shut down in 2020 after declaring bankruptcy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The league eventually returned, and Stoops re-signed in 2022. The Dallas Renegades were renamed the Arlington Renegades, with Stoops continuing as head coach.

    His return proved successful.

In 2023, Stoops led the Arlington Renegades to the XFL Championship Game, where they defeated the DC Defenders to win the league title.

The championship gave Stoops another major coaching achievement after his national championship success at Oklahoma.

    Personal Life

Bob Stoops is married to Carol Stoops. The couple has three children: a daughter named Mackenzie and twin sons, Isaac and Drake.

Football has remained an important part of the Stoops family. Isaac has coached football at the high school level, while Drake played wide receiver for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Stoops’ family connections to football have continued the tradition that began with his father, who coached Bob and several of his brothers during their high school years.
