    Early Life

Bobby Tambling was born on 18 September 1941 in Storrington, England. A talented schoolboy footballer, he represented England schoolboys and attracted interest from several professional clubs before joining Chelsea as a teenager in 1957.

He made his first-team debut at just 17 years old in 1959, immediately announcing himself by scoring in a 3–2 victory over West Ham United. His early promise quickly developed into elite-level performance, making him one of English football’s most reliable young forwards.

    Chelsea Career

Tambling became a central figure for Chelsea following the departure of Jimmy Greaves in 1961. He went on to become the club’s leading scorer for five consecutive seasons during the 1960s.

In 1962, he was named club captain after Chelsea’s relegation to the Second Division, helping lead the team back to the top flight. Alongside teammates such as Barry Bridges and Peter Bonetti, Tambling played a key role in Chelsea’s resurgence under manager Tommy Docherty.

One of his most memorable achievements came in 1966 when he scored five goals in a single league match against Aston Villa, a club record performance.

Tambling was also part of the Chelsea side that won the 1965 Football League Cup, where he scored in the first leg of the final against Leicester City. He later played in the 1967 FA Cup Final, scoring Chelsea’s only goal in a 2–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

By the late 1960s, he gradually lost his starting place to younger forwards and made only limited appearances before leaving the club in 1970.

    Crystal Palace

In 1970, Tambling moved to Crystal Palace, initially on loan before completing a permanent transfer.

Although injuries limited his consistency, he still contributed important goals across multiple seasons. One of his standout performances came in the Anglo-Italian Cup, where he scored twice against Inter Milan at the San Siro in a famous 2–1 victory.

Tambling also earned three senior caps for England national football team between 1962 and 1966, scoring once in a European Nations’ Cup qualifier against France.

    Move to Ireland

In the mid-1970s, Tambling moved to Ireland, where he continued his football career while also becoming involved in coaching and management.

He played for several League of Ireland clubs, including Cork Celtic, Waterford United, Shamrock Rovers, and Cork Alberts. His most successful spell came with Cork Celtic, where he helped the club win the league title and also served as player-manager.

Tambling later continued working in Irish football well after retirement, contributing to local clubs and youth development in County Cork.

    Later Life and Death

After retiring from professional football, Tambling settled in Ireland and lived for many years in Crosshaven, County Cork. He remained involved in football and community activities into his later life.
