An armed gang attacked Musanda Police Station in Mumias West Sub-County, Kakamega County, on Friday night, killing one officer, injuring two others.

The gang escaped with two G3 rifles loaded with 20 ammunition each.

According to police the attack occurred at around 8:50 p.m and the assailants were armed with guns.

    The victims had bullet wounds.

One of the police officers at the station said that while at Nyaleya Patrol Base within the station’s compound, he heard commotion at the report office followed by gunshots.

As he stepped out to check, he heard a voice shouting, “There is another one,” before another shot rang out.

A bullet struck him on the left side of the head as he ran back into his house.

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Musanda, accompanied by other officers, rushed to the scene where they found Corporal Richard Utolo lying unconscious in a pool of blood inside the office with a visible wound to his chin.

He has been fatally wounded by the assailants.

His colleague sustained a minor head injury, while a second one suffered a gunshot wound to the left ear.

A wife to one of the injured officers who was within the station premises at the time, was also injured, sustaining wounds to the head and right hand.

During the attack, the assailants stole two G3 rifles, each loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition.

The injured officers and civilian were rushed to Bungoma West Hospital and admitted. Corporal Utolo, who was in critical condition, later succumbed to his injuries.

His body moved to Life Care Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination, police said.

Police have launched a manhunt for the attackers and intensified efforts to recover the stolen rifles.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the operation progresses.

The area has been experiencing a surge in crime amid operations to tame the trend.

A special team of detectives was Saturday sent to the area to pursue the assailants.

Meanwhile, police said they arrested a close ally of the mastermind and chief coordinator linked to a string of robbery with violence and murder incidents that cast a dark shadow over wines and spirits traders in Kajiado, Kiambu and Nairobi has finally been arrested.

After days of painstaking investigations and follow-up on intelligence leads, detectives drawn from DCI Headquarters smoked the suspect out of his hideout in the Sonic area of Kasarani Sub-County, where he had holed up after some of his associates were arrested last week.

The suspect, together with other accomplices who are still at large, is also linked to a kidnapping gang that detectives are determined to dismantle to ensure justice for the victims.
