The crew and passengers who died in Thursday’s Mwihoko plane crash have been named by AMREF Flying Doctors CEO Stephen Gitau.
The crash happened on August 7, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m. in a residential area of Mwihoko, Kiambu County, shortly after the aircraft took off from Wilson Airport, Nairobi. The plane was headed to Hargeisa in northern Somalia.
In a statement, Mr. Gitau confirmed that those on board were Captain Muthuka Munuve, Captain Brian Kimani Miaro, Dr. Charles Mugo Njoroge, and Nurse Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula. All four died in the accident.
Captain Munuve had served nearly seven years as a captain and check pilot on the Cessna Citation XLS and Pilatus PC-12, with over 10,000 flying hours. Captain Miaro was an instructor on the Pilatus PC-12 and was training to become a check pilot on the same aircraft, with more than 5,800 flight hours.
Dr. Njoroge had worked for more than seven years as a medical doctor with AMREF, while Nurse Omusula had served as an emergency flight nurse for over four years.
“All of them took to the skies with purpose – to heal, to save, and to serve,” Mr. Gitau said. “Their courage, compassion, and commitment to saving lives will forever be remembered in this organization and in our country’s history.”
Gitau also expressed condolences to Mwihoko residents affected by the tragedy. He said the organization had provided mattresses, blankets, collapsible beds, and mosquito nets to families displaced by the crash.
Government agencies are helping identify victims. The aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, initially reported missing, have been recovered, though some aircraft parts are still unaccounted for.
