    Early Life

Doris Day was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She originally dreamed of becoming a professional dancer, but a serious car accident at age 14 left her with a severe leg injury that ended those ambitions.

While recovering, she discovered her passion for singing after listening to radio broadcasts and taking vocal lessons. A bandleader later suggested she adopt the stage name Doris Day, launching the career that would make her a household name.

    Music Career

Day’s breakthrough came in 1945 when she joined Les Brown and His Band of Renown.

Their recording of “Sentimental Journey” became one of the defining songs marking the end of World War II and established her as one of America’s leading vocalists.

She went on to enjoy a highly successful recording career, with hits including:

    • “Sentimental Journey”
    • “Secret Love”
    • “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)”

The Oscar-winning “Que Sera, Sera” became her signature song and remains closely associated with her legacy.

    Hollywood Career

Day made her film debut in “Romance on the High Seas” (1948) before becoming one of Warner Bros.’ biggest stars.

She appeared in a string of successful musicals, including:

    • “Calamity Jane”
    • “The Pajama Game”
    • “Love Me or Leave Me”

Later, she successfully transitioned into romantic comedies.

    Her biggest box-office successes included:

    • “Pillow Talk”
    • “Lover Come Back”
    • “Send Me No Flowers”

Her on-screen partnership with Rock Hudson became one of Hollywood’s most beloved comedy pairings.

She later starred in “The Doris Day Show,” which aired from 1968 to 1973.

    Financial Setbacks

Although Day enjoyed decades of enormous financial success, she experienced one of Hollywood’s most devastating financial betrayals.

After the death of her husband Martin Melcher in 1968, she discovered that he and a business associate had squandered more than $20 million of her fortune while leaving her approximately $500,000 in debt.

Her son, successful music producer Terry Melcher, helped stabilize her finances.

To rebuild her wealth, Day agreed to star in “The Doris Day Show,” despite not initially planning to return to television.

She later won a $27 million legal judgment against her former business managers. Although she recovered only a portion of the money because they lacked sufficient assets, she successfully rebuilt her fortune through real estate investments and business ventures.

Outside entertainment, Doris Day became a successful entrepreneur.

She was the majority owner of the Cypress Inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, one of the first luxury hotels in the United States to actively welcome pets.

She also accumulated valuable real estate holdings, including properties in:

    • Malibu
    • Beverly Hills
    • Carmel, California

Her seven-acre Carmel estate served as both her home and an animal rescue sanctuary during her later years.

    Animal Welfare Work

Following her retirement from acting, Day dedicated much of her life to animal welfare.

In 1978, she established the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which continues to support rescue organizations, veterinary programs, and animal protection initiatives across the United States.

Her advocacy helped make her one of the country’s most respected voices for animal rights.

    Personal Life

Despite her cheerful public image, Day faced numerous personal hardships.

She was married four times and endured significant financial losses during her third marriage.

She also experienced the heartbreaking loss of her only son, Terry Melcher, who died in 2004.

Nevertheless, Day remained active in philanthropy and animal advocacy throughout her retirement.

    Death

Doris Day died on May 13, 2019, at the age of 97.
