EACC nets Sh69.7 million in auction of Obado property

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has raised over Sh69.7 million from the public auction of five properties recovered from former Migori Governor Okoth Obado.

The other property belong former Nairobi County Treasury Head Stephen Ogaga Osiro.

The auction, held on October 9, 2025, followed successful court proceedings in Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Suit No. 20 of 2018 and Suit No. 10 of 2021. The properties, all located in Nairobi, are part of ten assets earmarked for disposal by the Commission under court directives.

According to the EACC, all five properties were sold at prices above their respective reserve valuations, signaling strong public interest and confidence in the process.

The property sold include Riara Apartment(3-bedroom) at Sh14,000,000 and Greenspan Estate Apartment (3-bedroom) – Sh6,950,000, Greenspan Estate Apartment (2-bedroom) – Sh6,755,000.

The others are Greenspan Estate Maisonette No. 279 – Sh11,000,000 and Loresho Ridge Estate Townhouse – Sh31,000,000

The properties were previously part of illegally acquired assets traced back to the two former officials, whose unexplained wealth and involvement in corruption were the subject of years-long investigations.

The EACC has announced that the remaining five properties, located in Kisumu and Migori counties, will be auctioned on Thursday, October 16, 2025, and has invited members of the public to participate.

According to EACC, in line with Section 56C of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, all proceeds from the asset sales will be remitted to the Consolidated Fund, as part of efforts to return stolen public resources to the Kenyan people.

The EACC reiterated its commitment to combating corruption and recovering stolen assets.

“This auction is a clear demonstration that crime does not pay. We will continue to trace, seize, and recover illicit wealth to ensure that no individual profits from corruption,” the EACC spokesman Stephen Karuga.

The auction marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s ongoing war against graft, with the Commission emphasizing that asset recovery remains one of the most effective tools in deterring economic crimes and restoring public trust.

The auction follows years of investigations into Obado’s tenure as Migori Governor, during which he and his family were accused of benefiting from fraudulent county contracts worth millions of shillings.

The High Court previously froze and later ordered the forfeiture of assets linked to the former governor after EACC traced payments and acquisitions to public funds.

EACC said the auction underscores its commitment to recovering stolen public assets, noting that proceeds from the sales will be surrendered to the State.

“Proceeds of corruption will not be enjoyed by those who plunder public resources. The assets must be restored to Kenyans,” the Commission said.
