Gregor has two brothers named Noah and Theo Kobel, both of whom are also goalkeepers.

The three grew up in a supportive family in Zurich, Switzerland, where his passion for sports was nurtured from an early age.

Their father, Peter Kobel, a former professional ice hockey player, also played a significant role in fostering Gregor’s athletic development.

    Career

Kobel began his football journey in the youth ranks of Swiss clubs, starting with FC Seefeld Zurich before moving to Grasshopper Club Zurich.

He joined TSG Hoffenheim in 2014 on loan and made his professional breakthrough there, debuting in the DFB-Pokal.

Limited first-team opportunities at Hoffenheim led to loan spells at FC Augsburg and VfB Stuttgart, where he impressed enough for a permanent move to Stuttgart in 2020.

In 2021, Borussia Dortmund signed him for around 15 million euros, and he quickly became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Kobel has since made over 200 appearances for Dortmund across all competitions, helping the team reach the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.

On the international stage, he progressed through Switzerland’s youth teams before earning senior caps starting in 2021.

He featured in major tournaments like UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cups, stepping up as the primary goalkeeper following Yann Sommer’s retirement.

    Accolades

At the club level with Borussia Dortmund, Kobel reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2024 as a runner-up.

Individually, he was named in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season for 2023–24 and has received selections in Bundesliga Team of the Season honors.

His youth achievements include a spot in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship Team of the Tournament.
