Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has appointed Jackson Kioko as the new Chief Executive Officer at Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority.

Dr Kioko has been serving as Director of Medical Services (DMS) since 2016 when he was appointed in acting capacity.

In the new appointments announced on Monday, Ms Kariuki named Dr John Wekesa Masasabi as acting director general in the Ministry of Health.

Invoking the powers conferred on her by the Health Act, 2017, the CS also appointed  Dr Pacifica Onyancha as the acting head of the proposed Department of Medical Services and Preventive and Promotive Services, a position previously held by Dr Peter Cherutich.

Dr Patrick Omwanda Amoth was named head of the proposed Department of Public Health in acting capacity.

The position was previously held by Dr Kepha Ombacho.

Last year, Dr Ombacho was on the spot after claims emerged that he had been occupying the office without a formal appointment letter after having officially retired on November 29, 2017. The claims were spearheaded by the Public Health and Environmental Health Professionals.

In the newly formed Department of Health Sector coordination and Intergovernmental Affairs, Ms Kariuki named Dr Osman Warfa as director.

In the Department of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, Dr Charles Mutinda Nzioka was named as acting head.

Lastly, Kariuki appointed Dr Anna Wamae as the acting chief executive officer of the newly created Human Resource Advisory Council.

The appointments come a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Prof Olive Mugenda to chair Kenyatta University Hospital board for three years.

Health CS Ms Kariuki was also appointed to the board. Others nominated include Kithinji Kiragu and Gladys Ogallo.

Prof Mugenda thanked  President Kenyatta and promised to have the hospital opened as soon as possible.

She has promised to pioneer the fight against cancer. She pointed out that the hospital was part of vision 2030 and she will endeavour to make it a centre of excellence in the region.

The hospital is a parastatal under the Ministry of Health and will play a key role in research by lecturers and students at Kenyatta University.
