Fifteen Kenyan fishermen were arrested on Thursday in the waters of Lake Victoria and detained in Sota Police Station, Tanzania for allegedly trespassing into the water borders of Tanzania.

The fishermen from Remba Island in Suba North, Homa Bay County had their fishing gears confiscated and their catch, worth millions of shillings taken away.

According to Homa Bay County Beach Management Units chairman, Edward Oremo, a team has been sent to Tanzania to solve the dispute and find a way to free the Kenyan counterparts.

During the arrest, five boats belonging to the fishermen were also seized.

Fishermen in Lake Victoria have subjected to different frustrations from the neighboring authorities over boundary trespassing.

Back in 2017, Ugandan authorities forced Kenyan fishermen to eat raw fish and also part with a fine of Shs5,000 each for operating in waters nearing Migingo island and other islands in the lake.

Mr Oremo has urged the government to find a lasting solution to the recurrent conflict over Lake Victoria borders.
