Exponents are commonly used in mathematics, science, finance, and academic writing to represent powers and formulas. Microsoft Word makes it easy to format numbers and letters as exponents using built-in tools and keyboard shortcuts. Learning how to add exponents in Word helps you create professional-looking documents and present equations correctly.

    1. Table of Contents

      Toggle
      • Type the Base Number and Exponent
      • Select the Exponent
      • Use the Superscript Button
      • Use a Keyboard Shortcut
      • Insert Equations for Complex Exponents
      • Review the Formatting

Type the Base Number and Exponent

Start by entering the number or letter that will serve as the base, followed by the number you want to make an exponent.

For example, type x2 if you want to create x².

    • Open your Word document
    • Type the base value and exponent
    • Place the cursor appropriately
    1. Select the Exponent

Highlight only the number or character that you want to appear as an exponent.

Do not select the base number or letter.

    • Click and drag over the exponent
    • Select only the character to be raised
    • Check that the correct text is highlighted
    1. Use the Superscript Button

Go to the Home tab and locate the Font group.

Click the Superscript (X²) button to raise the selected character above the normal text line.

    • Open the Home tab
    • Find the Superscript option
    • Click to apply the formatting
    1. Use a Keyboard Shortcut

You can also create exponents quickly using a keyboard shortcut.

This method is useful when working with multiple exponents.

    • Select the exponent character
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + = on Windows
    • Press Command + Shift + Plus (+) on Mac
    1. Insert Equations for Complex Exponents

For mathematical formulas, Word’s Equation feature provides additional formatting options.

This is ideal for scientific and academic documents.

    • Go to the Insert tab
    • Select Equation
    • Use the exponent templates provided
    1. Review the Formatting

After adding the exponent, check that it appears correctly and is easy to read.

Make any necessary adjustments before saving the document.

    • Confirm the exponent is raised properly
    • Check the document layout
    • Save your changes
