High humidity in a room can make the air feel uncomfortable and may contribute to condensation, musty smells, mould and damage to furniture. Knowing how to avoid humidity in the room can help create a fresher and more comfortable indoor environment. Simple changes such as improving ventilation, controlling moisture and using the right equipment can make a noticeable difference.

      Improve Air Circulation

Good air circulation helps prevent moist air from remaining trapped inside the room. Open windows and doors when outdoor conditions are suitable to allow fresh air to move through the space.

You can also use a standing or ceiling fan to keep air circulating.

    • Open windows regularly
    • Use fans to move air
    • Avoid keeping the room completely sealed for long periods
    1. Use a Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier is one of the most effective ways to reduce excess moisture in a room. It removes water from the air and collects it in a container or drains it through a hose.

Choose a dehumidifier that is suitable for the size of your room.

    • Select the correct capacity
    • Empty the water container regularly
    • Clean the filter as recommended
    1. Reduce Moisture From Bathrooms

Bathrooms can introduce a significant amount of moisture into nearby rooms. Use an extractor fan or open a window when taking a shower or bath.

Keep the bathroom door closed while showering to prevent moist air from spreading throughout the house.

    • Use bathroom ventilation
    • Keep the door closed during showers
    • Dry wet surfaces after bathing
    1. Avoid Drying Clothes Inside

Wet clothes release moisture into the surrounding air as they dry. If possible, dry clothes outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

If indoor drying is necessary, keep windows open and use a fan or dehumidifier.

    • Dry clothes outside when possible
    • Avoid drying large amounts of laundry in bedrooms
    • Increase ventilation when drying clothes indoors
    1. Fix Water Leaks

Leaking pipes, roofs, taps and appliances can increase indoor moisture levels. Check your room and surrounding areas regularly for signs of water leakage.

Repair leaks as soon as possible to prevent moisture from building up.

    • Check pipes and taps
    • Inspect ceilings and walls
    • Repair leaks promptly
    1. Use an Exhaust Fan in the Kitchen

Cooking can release steam and moisture into the air. Using an extractor or exhaust fan while cooking helps remove moist air from the room.

Keep lids on pots where practical to reduce the amount of steam released.

    • Use an extractor fan
    • Cover cooking pots
    • Open a window when appropriate
    1. Keep Indoor Plants Under Control

Plants release moisture into the air through a natural process called transpiration. While plants can improve the indoor environment, having too many in a poorly ventilated room may increase humidity.

Consider keeping fewer plants in rooms that already have high moisture levels.

    • Avoid overcrowding rooms with plants
    • Choose well-ventilated areas for plants
    • Monitor moisture levels
    1. Keep the Room Warm and Dry

Cold surfaces can encourage condensation when warm, moist air comes into contact with them. Maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature can help reduce condensation on walls and windows.

Avoid allowing the room to become excessively cold and damp.

    • Maintain a comfortable temperature
    • Wipe condensation from windows
    • Keep damp areas dry
    1. Use Moisture Absorbers

Moisture-absorbing products can help reduce small amounts of excess moisture, particularly in cupboards, wardrobes and other enclosed spaces.

They can be useful as an additional measure but may not be enough for rooms with severe humidity problems.

    • Place absorbers in enclosed spaces
    • Replace them when full
    • Use them alongside proper ventilation
    1. Keep Windows and Walls Dry

Regularly check windows, walls and corners for condensation or dampness. Wipe away visible moisture and investigate recurring damp patches.

Persistent dampness may indicate a leak, poor ventilation or another underlying problem.

    • Wipe condensation regularly
    • Check corners and behind furniture
    • Investigate recurring damp areas
    1. Keep Furniture Away From Damp Walls

Large furniture placed directly against walls can restrict air movement and trap moisture. Leave a small gap between furniture and walls to improve circulation.

This is particularly useful for wardrobes, beds and large cabinets.

    • Leave space behind furniture
    • Avoid blocking vents
    • Allow air to circulate around walls
    1. Monitor Indoor Humidity

A hygrometer can help you understand how humid your room is. Monitoring humidity makes it easier to determine whether your efforts are working.

If humidity remains consistently high despite ventilation and moisture control, consider using a dehumidifier or seeking professional advice.

    • Use a digital hygrometer
    • Check humidity regularly
    • Take action when levels remain high
