Drawing a banana is a fun and simple exercise, especially for beginners who want to improve their skills in sketching natural objects. Bananas have a unique curved shape and smooth texture, which makes them ideal for practicing curves, lines, and shading. All you need is a pencil, eraser, paper, and optionally some color tools. Here is how to draw a banana.

    Observe the Banana’s Shape

Before you begin, take a moment to visualize or look at a banana. Notice how it curves gently, tapers at both ends, and has a thick peel with light ridges. Understanding its shape will help you draw it more realistically.

    Sketch the Basic Outline

Start by drawing a long, curved shape that resembles a crescent moon. This curved line forms the outer edge of the banana. Then, draw a parallel curved line below it to complete the shape of the banana’s body. Connect both ends with slightly rounded tips. One end should be thicker for the stem, and the other narrower where the banana tapers off.

    Add the Stem and Base

At the thicker end, draw a small rectangle or nub to represent the banana stem. On the opposite end, add a small, curved bump to finish the shape where it narrows. Keep your lines light so you can adjust if needed.

    Draw the Ridges

Bananas usually have faint vertical ridges running from top to bottom. Draw two or three soft lines that curve along the banana’s body, following its natural curve. These lines should be light and subtle—they help add detail without making the drawing look too harsh.

    Add Shading and Details

Now, shade the banana to give it a more 3D appearance. Decide where your light source is coming from. Lightly shade the underside and one side of the banana to show shadows. Keep the top side lighter to show where light hits it. You can use a soft pencil or your fingertip to blend the shading for a smoother look.

If the banana has brown spots or lines, you can add those as small patches or dots for extra realism.

    Color Your Drawing (Optional)

If you’d like to add color, use yellow for the body, green or brown for the stem, and light brown for any spots or ripening areas. Add some white highlights for a glossy effect.
