The Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja on Wednesday May 27, 2026, attended Rwanda National Police (RNP) Day in Kigali.

This followed an invitation from the Inspector General of the Rwanda National Police, Felix Namuhoranye, and the Government of the Republic of Rwanda.

Rwanda National Police Day commemorates 25 years of the existence of the law enforcement body.

The RNP was conceptualised in the year 2000 through the merging of three policing units — the National Gendarmerie, the Communal Police and the Judicial Police — into the current Rwanda National Police.

The occasion featured displays of pomp and colour, alongside exhibitions highlighting strategic preparedness and readiness to serve the public in a rapidly evolving policing environment.

The ceremony also included the commissioning of 436 officer cadets, presided over by the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.

The cadets are expected to advance the future aspirations and operational readiness of the Rwanda National Police.

IG Kanja was among 13 invited inspectors general from various countries.

Accompanying the Inspector General was the Director of the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons (KNFP), Adamson Bungei.

On March 23, Kanja hosted Namuhoranye in Nairobi.

The event served as a platform for top-tier security officials from both nations to deliberate on evolving security threats and the future of cross-border policing.

Discussions centred on deepening the decade-long partnership between Kenya and Rwanda. Both leaders explored new joint initiatives aimed at tackling modern security challenges.

Kanja emphasised the importance of working through transnational bodies such as the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (EAPCCO), the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL), the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) and the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA), to create a unified front against crime.

He extended a special note of gratitude to Rwanda for its support of Kenya’s candidate during the election of Africa’s Delegate to the INTERPOL Executive Committee at the recent 93rd General Assembly in Morocco.

Namuhoranye praised the cordial relationship between the two services, thanking IG Kanja for the warm reception and the continued spirit of “bilateral brotherhood.”

This diplomatic engagement underscores a shared commitment to capacity building and intelligence exchange, ensuring that both Kenya and Rwanda remain resilient in the face of shifting regional security dynamics.
