Drafted 15th overall by the Rangers in 2011, he has built a reputation as a consistent point producer and two-way contributor throughout his career.

He grew up in a hockey-loving family in Ohio before moving to the Pittsburgh area, where he developed his skills alongside future NHL players.

    Siblings

    J. T. has one younger brother, Matt Miller, who also pursued a hockey career.

The brothers grew up skating together on a backyard rink built by their father, Dennis, in East Palestine, Ohio.

They trained rigorously and shared the dream of playing at high levels, with Matt following in J.T.’s footsteps by playing in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Youngstown Phantoms.

While Matt did not reach the NHL, the siblings maintained a close bond through their shared hockey journey, training together and supporting each other’s development.

    Career

Miller began his path through the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP) and played major junior hockey with the Plymouth Whalers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) after being drafted.

He made his NHL debut with the Rangers in the 2012-13 season and gradually established himself despite multiple assignments to the AHL affiliate.

Over his early years in New York, he contributed to deep playoff runs, including the 2014 Stanley Cup Final appearance.

In 2018, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he played for one full season before being dealt to the Vancouver Canucks in 2019.

In Vancouver, Miller elevated his game significantly, recording career-high seasons with over 100 points and becoming a fan favorite for his production and intensity.

In January 2025, he was traded back to the New York Rangers.

Before the 2025-26 season, he was named the 29th captain in Rangers franchise history.

Miller has represented the United States internationally, winning gold medals at multiple junior World Championships (U17, U18, and U20).

    Accolades

Miller was selected to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game and has received multiple team awards during his time with the Vancouver Canucks, including the Fred J. Hume Award (most gentlemanly player), the Pavel Bure Most Exciting Player Award, and the Cyrus H. McLean Trophy as team MVP.

In 2026, he was named the winner of the Rod Gilbert “Mr. Ranger” Award with the New York Rangers, recognizing leadership and embodiment of the franchise’s values.

Miller has posted impressive career statistics, including multiple 30-goal and 80+ point seasons, while ranking among NHL leaders in points and hits over recent years.

Though he has not yet won a Stanley Cup, he has participated in numerous playoff runs and continues to serve as a cornerstone player and captain for the Rangers.
