Jan Smithers is an American actress who has an estimated net worth of $2 million. She is best known for her memorable role as Bailey Quarters, the soft-spoken and intelligent radio station receptionist on the hit CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati. The series aired from 1978 to 1982 and became one of the defining workplace comedies of its era.

Before transitioning into acting, Smithers first gained public attention as a teen model, famously appearing on the cover of Newsweek in 1966 at just 16 years old. Her early modeling success helped launch her into the public spotlight long before her Hollywood career began.

After WKRP in Cincinnati, she continued acting in several television shows before eventually retiring from the entertainment industry in the late 1980s.

    Early Life

Jan Smithers was born Karin Jan Smithers on July 3, 1949, in North Hollywood, California.

She grew up in Woodland Hills, where she attended William Howard Taft Charter High School. Her father worked as a lawyer, while her mother was a homemaker.

Smithers developed an early comfort in front of the camera and began modeling as a teenager. Her life changed dramatically when she was discovered by a photographer while playing hooky at the beach.

In March 1966, she appeared on the cover of Newsweek riding on the back of a motorcycle in a feature titled “The Teen Agers – A Newsweek Study of what They’re Really Like.” The cover instantly turned her into a teenage sensation and marked the beginning of her public career.

    Early TV Career

After her early modeling fame, Jan Smithers gradually transitioned into acting.

She landed her first television appearance in a one-episode role on the series Love Story. In the mid-1970s, she appeared in projects such as:

    • When the North Wind Blows (1974)
    • Where the Lilies Bloom (1974)

Her major breakthrough came in 1978 when she was cast as Bailey Quarters in WKRP in Cincinnati.

The sitcom also starred Gary Sandy, Gordon Jump, Loni Anderson, and Richard Sanders. Smithers appeared in 86 of the show’s 88 episodes, making her one of the central figures in the ensemble cast.

Her character stood out for being intelligent, reserved, and professionally ambitious—qualities that contrasted with the more flamboyant personalities around her. Bailey Quarters became a fan favorite and a defining role in Smithers’ career.

In 2014, she reunited with former cast members for a WKRP in Cincinnati retrospective event at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills.

    Television Career After WKRP

After the success of WKRP in Cincinnati, Jan Smithers continued working steadily in television throughout the 1980s.

She appeared in several popular shows, including:

    • The Love Boat
    • Murder, She Wrote
    • The Fall Guy
    • Mike Hammer
    • Cover Up
    • Hotel
    • Legmen
    • Finder of Lost Loves
    • Comedy Factory

Although she remained active in Hollywood, her roles became less frequent over time. Her final known acting credit came in 1987 in the film Mr. Nice Guy, after which she quietly stepped away from acting.

    Personal Life

Jan Smithers has had a relatively private personal life compared to many of her Hollywood peers.

In 1971, she married Kipp Whitman, but the marriage lasted only about a year.

In 1986, she married actor James Brolin after meeting him on the set of the television film Hotel. The couple had one daughter together, Molly.

During their marriage, Smithers also became stepmother to Brolin’s two children from a previous relationship, including actor Josh Brolin.

Jan and James divorced in 1995. One year later, Brolin began a high-profile relationship with singer and actress Barbra Streisand.

    Life After Hollywood

Following her retirement from acting, Jan Smithers gradually stepped out of the public spotlight.

She spent time living in Canada before eventually settling in Ojai, California.

Smithers has since focused on a quieter lifestyle centered around wellness, spirituality, and environmental causes. She is known to practice meditation and yoga, and has traveled to India on multiple occasions.

She also supports various charitable initiatives and is particularly passionate about environmental issues, including advocacy for solar energy and opposition to nuclear power.
