Kenya and China have advanced discussions on the development of five hospitals in counties.

The hospitals will be constructed in Kericho, Bungoma, Murang’a, Baringo and Kilifi counties, as part of ongoing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The talks were held on Friday between Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr. Korir Sing’Oei, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Kenya, Guo Haiyan.

The discussions were aimed at further strengthening the Kenya–China partnership, as envisioned during recent engagements between President William Samoei Ruto and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to officials, the proposed hospitals are intended to enhance access to quality healthcare services at the county level.

Engagements concerning the Baringo and Kericho hospital projects are already at an advanced stage, signaling progress toward implementation, the officials said.

The meeting brought together senior officials from both governments, including representatives from Kenya’s National Treasury, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, alongside officials from the Chinese government.

The hospital projects form part of broader cooperation between Nairobi and Beijing in infrastructure development, healthcare, and capacity building, with the Kenyan government seeking to expand and modernize health facilities to meet growing demand across the country.

Officials said this is a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the health sector, following high-level talks held on Friday in Nairobi.

Meanwhile, in assessing the risks and uncertainties pertinent to the current global environment, the two assured Ambassador Haiyan of Kenya’s steadfast commitment to the rules of international law as stipulated in the UN Charter and reiterated our firm adherence to the One China Policy.

This means Kenya doesn’t support Taiwan.

The meeting reviewed the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, which is a formal way of saying Kenya and China have a high-level, long-term relationship covering trade, infrastructure, diplomacy, and development cooperation.
