Two handlers were arrested after 11 horses and two camels were detained over claims of abuse at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa.

The Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) and the police staged an operation in the area on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and rescued the animals.

The officials said they had been petitioned over claims of animal abuse, hence the operation.

Other handlers present escaped as the officials arrived for the operation.

Police said they are, with the KSPCA investigating the claims of abuse to arraign the two and others at large.

The animals were escorted on a lorry to KSPCA centre in Kijipwa, Kilifi County for further action.

The animals are usually used for riding by visitors to the area at a fee.

The society officials said they had received complaints of abuses on the animals hence the move to stage the operation.

The society said they are extending the operation to major beaches in the area following concerns the animals are being abused there.

Some beach boys use the animals to make a living but there are concerns they are not handled well hence the operations.

KSPCA is Kenya’s leading animal welfare organization and has branches in many towns in the country.
