Kyle James Kozub Mooney, born on September 4, 1984, in San Diego, California, is an American comedian, actor, writer, and director.

Growing up in the Scripps Ranch neighborhood, Mooney developed an early passion for comedy, influenced by his love for 1980s and 1990s television, VHS collecting, and local San Diego culture, including carne asada burritos and Rigoberto’s red salsa.

His career spans a notable tenure on Saturday Night Live, critically acclaimed film projects, and creative ventures in animation and music, establishing him as a multifaceted entertainer with a cult following.

    Siblings

Kyle is the youngest of three boys born to Linda Kozub, a former reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune, and Brian Mooney, an environmental consultant and planner.

His older brothers, Sean Mooney and Ryan Mooney, played a significant role in shaping his early interests and comedic sensibilities.

Growing up, Kyle was heavily influenced by the music, shows, and trends his brothers introduced him to, which later informed his nostalgic and retro-inspired comedic work.

While Sean and Ryan maintain private lives and are not public figures, their presence in Kyle’s formative years contributed to his self-described family-oriented nature.

    Career

Mooney’s comedic journey began at Scripps Ranch High School, where he won Best Actor for playing Prospero in Shakespeare’s The Tempest and earned the title of class clown.

At the University of Southern California, he studied film and joined the improv and sketch comedy group Commedus Interruptus, where he met lifelong collaborators Beck Bennett, Nick Rutherford, and Dave McCary.

In 2007, the quartet formed the sketch comedy group Good Neighbor, producing viral YouTube videos like “Toast” and “Lakers Champions” that showcased Mooney’s knack for deadpan humor and awkward character-driven sketches.

Their channel, GoodNeighborStuff, ranked among NewMediaRockstars’ Top 100 Channels in 2014.

Mooney joined Saturday Night Live in 2013 as a featured player during the show’s 39th season, after an unsuccessful audition in 2012.

Promoted to repertory status in 2015, he remained until 2022, bringing memorable characters like Bruce Chandling, the 4/20 Weed-Smoking Guy, and Chris Fitzpatrick to the show, alongside celebrity impressions including Jeff Bezos, Michael Jackson, and Pope Francis.

His SNL sketches often drew from his Good Neighbor roots, emphasizing absurd humor and retro aesthetics.

Beyond SNL, Mooney co-wrote and starred in the 2017 film Brigsby Bear, a heartfelt comedy-drama about a man obsessed with a children’s TV show, which premiered at Sundance to critical praise.

He also co-created, wrote, and starred in the 2021 Netflix animated series Saturday Morning All Star Hits!, a parody of 1980s and 1990s Saturday morning cartoons, directed by Dave McCary and animated by Ben Jones.

In 2024, Mooney made his directorial debut with Y2K, a horror-comedy for A24 set on New Year’s Eve 1999, featuring Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Alicia Silverstone.

The film, inspired by his teenage disappointment with the Y2K scare, blends retro nostalgia with chaotic humor.

Mooney also released his debut album, The Real Me, under the name Kyle M. on March 21, 2025, through Stones Throw Records, further showcasing his creative versatility.

His television credits include roles in Hello Ladies, Arrested Development, and Spree, while his voice work includes Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
