    Early Life

Ahmadinejad was born October 28, 1956, in Aradan, Semnan Province, Iran, the fourth of seven children in a working-class family. Originally named Hassan Fereydoun, his family later adopted the surname Ahmadinejad. He grew up in a religious, disciplined household, later moving to Tehran for better opportunities.

In 1976, he enrolled at the Iran University of Science and Technology, studying civil engineering. Active in Islamic student groups, he embraced revolutionary ideals. Ahmadinejad later earned a Ph.D. in traffic and transportation engineering in 1997.

    Early Career

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Ahmadinejad joined Islamist student movements that promoted clerical control over universities. During the Iran-Iraq War, he served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was affiliated with the Basij militia. He then moved into provincial administration, serving as governor of Ardabil Province from 1994 to 1997, before returning to academia.

    Mayor of Tehran

In 2003, Ahmadinejad was elected mayor of Tehran, gaining national recognition. As mayor, he reversed several moderate reforms, promoted conservative policies, and emphasized personal modesty and charity initiatives, cultivating a populist image that contrasted with Iran’s elite.

    Presidency of Iran

Ahmadinejad was elected President in 2005, defeating former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani with roughly 62% of the vote.

    • Domestic policies: Promoted populist programs, including subsidies and low-interest loans, but faced criticism for economic mismanagement, high inflation, and capital flight.
    • International stance: Became notorious for confrontational rhetoric, challenging the West and Israel, questioning the Holocaust, and defending Iran’s nuclear program.
    • Second term: Re-elected in 2009 amid allegations of vote rigging, triggering the Green Movement protests, which were violently suppressed.

By 2013, his presidency ended amid clashes with reformists and conservative factions, and Hassan Rouhani succeeded him.

    Personal Life

    Death

Ahmadinejad was reportedly killed on February 28, 2026, during a US-Israeli strike on northeast Tehran. His death marked the end of a polarizing and historically significant chapter in Iran’s modern political history.
