Mark Scheifele is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre and alternate captain for the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Born on March 15, 1993, in Kitchener, Ontario, he stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 207 pounds while shooting right-handed.

Selected seventh overall by the Jets in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the first pick for the organization after its relocation from Atlanta, Scheifele has become the face of the franchise.

He holds multiple Jets records, including for career goals and points, and is known for his hockey intelligence, strong two-way play, leadership, and consistency as a top-line centre.

    Siblings

Mark is the youngest of three siblings raised in a close-knit, sports-oriented Christian family in Kitchener, Ontario.

His older brother Kyle, who is about two years his senior, was a major influence on Mark’s early athletic development, with the two often competing intensely in backyard games and rollerblading adventures.

Mark even wore number 55 in minor hockey to emulate his brother.

Their older sister Janelle, roughly six years older than Mark, rounded out the active household where all three siblings participated in various sports.

Tragically, the family faced the loss of their father Brad in May 2025.

    Career

Scheifele grew up playing minor hockey in Kitchener, initially as a defenceman before transitioning to forward.

He was drafted by the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit but developed with the Kitchener Dutchmen Jr. B team before his rights were traded to the Barrie Colts.

In junior, he excelled with the Colts, posting strong scoring numbers and helping lead deep playoff runs, including a memorable 2013 postseason.

Drafted highly by the Jets, Scheifele made his NHL debut in 2011 but split time between the NHL and OHL early on.

He became a full-time NHL player in 2013-14 and steadily evolved into a premier centre.

By the 2015-16 season, he broke out with his first 20-goal campaign and first hat trick.

Scheifele signed an eight-year contract extension in 2016 and has anchored Winnipeg’s top line for years, often alongside linemates like Nikolaj Ehlers, Kyle Connor, and Blake Wheeler.

He has led the Jets in scoring multiple times, reached the 100-point plateau, and helped the team to deep playoff appearances, including a Western Conference Final run.

    Accolades

In junior hockey, Scheifele set OHL playoff records for points and assists in 2013.

Internationally, he won gold with Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Championship and has represented his country at multiple levels, including World Juniors.

In the NHL, Scheifele has been selected to multiple All-Star Games, including in 2019 and 2020.

He has led the Jets in scoring on several occasions and holds numerous franchise records.

Additional honors include multiple team awards with Winnipeg, such as the Three Stars Award, and consistent recognition for his leadership and community involvement.
