Motorists using the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok Road faced major disruption Thursday evening after flash floods and heavy silt deposition rendered sections of the highway impassable at Kedong Ranch near Suswa.

In a statement, the Kenya National Highways Authority said the flooding occurred following intense rainfall pounding the area, a situation that has increasingly affected key transport corridors across the Rift Valley in recent weeks.

KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said emergency response teams had been dispatched and were working round the clock to clear the debris and restore traffic flow along the affected sections.

“The Authority is currently working to reopen the affected sections of the road,” Kimeli said, noting that silt washed onto the roadway had significantly hindered movement, especially for smaller vehicles.

The Authority warned motorists against attempting to drive through flooded sections, cautioning that fast-moving and unstable ground could easily sweep away vehicles or cause them to get stuck in the thick silt deposits.

Drivers were urged to strictly adhere to instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals stationed along the highway to manage the situation and prevent accidents.

KeNHA further raised concern over continued heavy rainfall in the area, warning that conditions remain hazardous, particularly along the stretch between Naivasha Inland Container Depot (Km 14) and Suswa Ranch (Km 39). Motorists using the corridor were advised to exercise extreme caution as response operations continue.

To ease congestion and enhance safety, motorists yet to begin their journeys were advised to consider using the Narok–Njoro–Nakuru Road as an alternative route.

The Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok road is a critical link connecting Nairobi to Narok and onward to western Kenya, and disruptions along the route often have a ripple effect on both passenger and cargo transport.

KeNHA assured road users that all necessary measures are being taken to restore normal operations as quickly as possible, emphasizing that the safety of motorists remains its top priority amid the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
The situation may worsen as the met department warned of more rains ahead.
