    Early Life

Poppy Harlow was born Katharine Julia Harlow on May 2, 1982, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is the daughter of James Lee Harlow and Mary Louise Baird.

Her nickname, “Poppy,” originated during her childhood and eventually became the name she used professionally.

Harlow’s father was an attorney and died when she was 15 years old. She attended The Blake School, a private college-preparatory school in Minneapolis, graduating in 2001.

She subsequently enrolled at Columbia University in New York. Harlow graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science and Middle Eastern studies.

Her education provided a strong foundation for a journalism career that would eventually focus heavily on politics, business and national affairs.

    Early Journalism Career

Harlow began gaining professional experience while she was still a student at Columbia. She interned at CBS and later continued working for CBS MarketWatch after graduating.

She subsequently worked as an assistant producer for CBS Newspath, gaining experience in television news production and reporting.

Harlow then moved into on-camera journalism, joining NY1 News Local Edition as an anchor and reporter. She covered Staten Island and New Jersey, reporting on local politics, economic issues and cultural events.

Her experience in local television helped her build the reporting skills and on-air presence that eventually led to national media opportunities.

    Forbes and CNN

In September 2007, Harlow joined the Forbes.com Video Network. Her work there expanded beyond traditional financial reporting to include business, fashion and entertainment coverage.

In 2008, she joined CNN. She initially served as an anchor for CNNMoney.com while also reporting for CNN, CNN International and HLN.

Harlow’s career at CNN continued to expand. In April 2012, she was named a New York-based CNN correspondent, placing her at the center of the network’s coverage of major business and national news stories.

Her work earned several industry honors, including a Gracie Award for best online investigative program or feature and the SABEW Best in Business Award.

    CNN Newsroom

Harlow became increasingly prominent as an anchor at CNN during the 2010s.

In February 2017, she and Jim Sciutto became co-anchors of the morning edition of “CNN Newsroom,” which aired from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The program featured breaking news, political coverage, interviews and analysis of major national and international events.

Harlow’s position at CNN gave her the opportunity to interview politicians, business leaders and other influential figures while reporting on some of the biggest stories in the United States.

    CNN This Morning

In 2022, CNN announced plans to revamp its morning programming. Harlow was selected to co-anchor the new program alongside Don Lemon and Kaitlan Collins.

The show was eventually named “CNN This Morning” and debuted in December 2022.

The program represented another major step in Harlow’s career, placing her in one of CNN’s most visible daily programming slots.

Her work on the program continued her focus on breaking news, politics, business, culture and major national events.

    On-Air Controversy

Harlow has also faced controversy during her career.

In 2013, while reporting on the conviction of two Steubenville, Ohio, high school football players for the rape of a 16-year-old girl, Harlow’s commentary drew criticism from some viewers who believed she appeared sympathetic toward the convicted teenagers.

A petition calling on CNN to apologize reportedly attracted more than 250,000 signatures within two days.

Harlow continued her career at CNN despite the controversy and remained a prominent anchor and correspondent.

    On-Air Health Incident

Harlow also made headlines in December 2015 after briefly passing out while live on the air.

At the time, she was pregnant. She was seated at the anchor desk when she appeared to lose consciousness for a short period during the broadcast.

Harlow later returned to the program and told viewers that she was fine. She was examined at a hospital, where she reported that both she and her unborn daughter were doing well.

The incident attracted significant attention because it occurred during a live CNN broadcast.

    Personal Life

Poppy Harlow is married to Sinisa Babcic. The couple has two children.

Their daughter was born in April 2016, while their son was born in February 2018.

Despite maintaining a high-profile television career, Harlow has generally kept her family life relatively private.

    Education at Yale Law School

Harlow continued her education after establishing herself as a national television journalist.

She enrolled in a Master of Studies in Law program at Yale Law School and completed the degree in 2022.

Her legal education complemented her journalism career, particularly her work covering politics, government, courts and public policy.

In 2022, Harlow also received a John Jay Award from Columbia College, recognizing her professional accomplishments.
