Legalize marijuana or bhang as is referred to by many, Raila Odinga Junior has urged the government.

Raila Junior, ODM party leader Raila Odinga’s second son, said that there should be a serious discourse around its legalization and control.

He was referring to a story appearing on the Star, where Njoroge Mbugua, from Limuru was arrested by police for having planted the illegal substance in his piece of land.

“Serious discussion has to be held on the legalization and control of cannabis sativa, and entrepreneurs like MR Mbugua in their business and religious conquests #LegalizeIt,” Raila Junior said.

Mr Mbugua told the police that he has been planting marijuana for the past two years and that his was a command from God.

“This is my work alone and it is ‘god’ who instructed me to plant. I went to the heavens and came back because there are a lot of people who use it,” he said.

In August, Economist David Ndii argued that bhang or pot, a non-addictive substance is illegal because “ordinary people can roll their own joints, but cigarettes are made by big capitalists.”

Ndii said that back in the day he struggled with cigarette addiction but never bhang.

“I was addicted to cigarettes, struggled a lot to quit. I smoked a lot of pot in my youth, never had cravings or withdrawal symptoms. You’d have to smoke a hell of a lot of pot to get addicted, if at all,” Ndii said on Twitter.

He further alleged that marijuana consumption is therapeutic and a “victimless crime.”

According to a National Institute on Drug Abuse study, estimates of the number of people addicted to marijuana are controversial, in part because studies of substance use often use dependence as a proxy for addiction even though it is possible to be dependent without being addicted.
