The body of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga will be airlifted from the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, to his Opoda Farm home in Bondo, Siaya County, for burial.

This marks a change from the earlier plan to transport the body by road. The burial program has seen several adjustments over the past few days as preparations intensify for the national farewell.

On Saturday morning, Raila’s body was flown from the Kisumu International Airport to the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium for public viewing. The move surprised many of his supporters who had gathered at the airport expecting a road procession.

The military helicopter carrying Raila’s body touched down at 7:20 a.m. under tight security. The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service were deployed to ensure order and safety during the viewing ceremony. Authorities urged mourners to maintain peace and pay their respects with dignity.

Friday night saw thousands of Kisumu residents hold a candle-lit vigil across the city streets, singing liberation songs and carrying flowers in honour of the late opposition leader. The event reflected the deep sense of loss felt across the nation.

The public viewing, initially planned for Moi Stadium, was shifted to the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo following last-minute logistical changes.

After the viewing, Raila’s body will be flown to his rural home at Opoda Farm in Bondo, where he will be laid to rest on Sunday beside his late mother at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

Only close family members and invited guests will attend the private burial, in keeping with Raila’s personal wishes. Security has been heightened around Opoda Farm as the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its most influential political figures.
