How Rock Hudson Built His Wealth

Hudson established himself as one of Hollywood’s leading actors during the 1950s through a string of successful films produced by Universal Pictures.

Among his most notable movies were:

    • “Magnificent Obsession” (1954)
    • “All That Heaven Allows” (1955)
    • “Giant” (1956)
    • “Pillow Talk” (1959)
    • “Lover Come Back” (1961)
    • “Send Me No Flowers” (1964)
    • “Seconds” (1966)

His popularity later extended to television, where he starred in the successful detective series “McMillan & Wife.”

Across his career, Hudson accumulated 75 acting credits, making him one of the most recognizable stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

    Early Life

Rock Hudson was born Roy Harold Scherer Jr. on November 17, 1925, in Winnetka, Illinois.

Raised during the Great Depression, he experienced financial hardship after his father left the family. Following high school graduation, Hudson enlisted in the United States Navy, serving until 1946.

He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, where talent agent Henry Willson gave him the stage name Rock Hudson.

    Rise to Hollywood Stardom

Hudson made his film debut with a small role in “Fighter Squadron” in 1948 before steadily building his résumé through westerns and adventure films.

His breakthrough came in 1954 with “Magnificent Obsession,” opposite Jane Wyman. The film transformed him into a major Hollywood leading man.

He continued his rise with director Douglas Sirk, starring in acclaimed melodramas including “All That Heaven Allows” and “Written on the Wind.”

In 1956, Hudson earned his only Academy Award nomination for his performance alongside James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor in the epic western “Giant.”

    Comedy Success

Although initially known for dramatic roles, Hudson found enormous commercial success in romantic comedies.

His partnership with Doris Day produced several box-office hits, including:

    • “Pillow Talk”
    • “Lover Come Back”
    • “Send Me No Flowers”

The trio of films established Hudson as one of Hollywood’s most successful romantic comedy stars.

    Television Career

As film roles became less frequent during the 1970s, Hudson successfully transitioned to television.

His biggest television success came with “McMillan & Wife,” where he starred as police commissioner Stewart “Mac” McMillan opposite Susan Saint James.

The series aired from 1971 to 1977 and became one of the era’s most popular crime dramas.

    Hudson later appeared in:

    • “The Martian Chronicles”
    • “The Devlin Connection”
    • “Dynasty,” where he made one of his final television appearances.

    Estate and Lawsuit

Following Hudson’s death, his estate became the subject of a highly publicized legal dispute.

A former romantic partner sued Hudson’s former personal secretary, alleging that he had been repeatedly assured Hudson was not infected with HIV despite asking about his health.

The lawsuit resulted in a $14.5 million judgment against the secretary.

Hudson’s own estate, valued at approximately $10 million, was divided between charitable causes and his former partner George Nader. Those assets were not affected by the legal judgment.

    Personal Life

Although his sexual orientation remained hidden from the public for much of his career, Hudson was widely known within Hollywood to be gay.

In 1955, he married Phyllis Gates, his agent’s secretary, though the marriage ended in divorce three years later.

He later had relationships with several men, including author Armistead Maupin, writer Tom Clark, and Marc Christian.

    Death

In 1984, Hudson was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS but initially kept the illness private while seeking treatment.

After collapsing during a trip to Paris, his diagnosis became public, making him one of the first major celebrities to openly acknowledge having AIDS.

Rock Hudson died on October 2, 1985, at the age of 59, from complications related to AIDS.
