Ryan McLeod is a high-speed Canadian professional ice hockey forward currently making a significant impact with the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League.

Born on September 21, 1999, in Mississauga, Ontario, he was largely shaped by a family environment that revolved around the sport, beginning his journey on a backyard rink at the age of 18 months.

Known for his exceptional skating ability and high hockey IQ, McLeod has established himself as a versatile center who can contribute both offensively and defensively.

Before his tenure in Buffalo, he was a key depth piece for the Edmonton Oilers, where he earned a reputation as one of the fastest players in the league.

    Siblings

Ryan’s eldest brother, Matt McLeod, took a slightly different path through the collegiate system, playing for Canisius College before moving into the professional ranks.

Matt has spent time playing in the ECHL and most recently found success overseas with the Belfast Giants in Northern Ireland.

The middle brother, Michael McLeod, was perhaps the most heralded prospect of the trio initially, being selected 12th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Michael played several seasons for the Devils as a premier face-off specialist before continuing his career internationally.

    Career

McLeod’s professional trajectory began in the Ontario Hockey League with the Mississauga Steelheads, where he played alongside his brother Michael.

His vision and playmaking skills were evident early on, leading the Edmonton Oilers to select him in the second round, 40th overall, of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

After a brief stint with the Saginaw Spirit and a successful developmental period with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL, McLeod made his NHL debut on April 26, 2021.

During his time with the Oilers, he became an essential component of their bottom-six forward group, providing elite speed and penalty-killing utility during their deep playoff runs in 2022 and 2024.

In the 2023-2024 season, he helped Edmonton reach the Stanley Cup Final, showcasing his ability to perform under the highest pressure.

In July 2024, McLeod’s career took a major turn when he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres.

This transition saw him take on a much larger role, moving up the lineup to receive top-six minutes and significant power-play time.

He responded by having a breakout 2024-2025 campaign, setting career highs in goals, assists, and points.

His performance was so impressive that it earned him a lucrative four-year, $20 million contract extension with the Sabres in 2025.

By the 2025-2026 season, McLeod solidified his status as one of the premier “two-way” centers in the league, maintaining a point-per-game pace for much of the year while leading his team in shorthanded ice time and face-off win percentage.

    Accolades

During his amateur years, he was named the OHL Cup MVP in 2015 and earned the GTHL Player of the Year award, highlighting his dominance as a youth player.

Internationally, he represented Canada at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, where he won a gold medal, and later wore the maple leaf at the 2019 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

In the professional realm, he has been recognized through advanced analytics as one of the NHL’s elite skaters, consistently placing in the 95th percentile or higher for max skating speed.

His recent accolades include being a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2024 for his sportsmanship and high standard of play, alongside becoming a primary leader for the Buffalo Sabres’ resurgent roster.
