A two-year-old girl drowned while playing in a water canal near a church in Thiba, Kirinyaga County.

Officials said the child had accompanied her parents to a church event in the area on Sunday February 22, 2026 when the incident happened.

They had been to Kiungano Kia Roho Mutheru Church Moroto for Sunday service when the child left unnoticed to a nearby water canal where she drowned.

The body with no visible marks was found to have been pushed downstream about 300 meters from the church and was moved to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Elsewhere in Kariobangi South, Nairobi, a man was found dead in a lodging in a suspected suicide mission.

Police identified him as Masakhwe Wesonga, 37.

He had checked into the room on Saturday night before he hanged himself therein using a manilla rope that was found tied around his neck.

A cleaner at the facility was concerned the tenant had not woken up to leave as planned and knocked on the door but there was no response. It was then that she called for help to open the door when they found the body hanging on the rope. A suicide note with the contacts of his family was found in the room as the body was moved to the mortuary.

In Makuyu, Muranga County, the lifeless body of one James Kiarie was found along a small path at Marura village after a suspected murder.

He had a deep cut on the forehead suspected to be caused by a blunt object, police said, adding he was a casual labourer in the area. The motive of the murder was not immediately known and the body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy into the Sunday incident.

In Savanah area, Nairobi, a man was found murdered and his body abandoned on the roadside. Locals suspected he is a member of the street families.
