X finally shut down its older Revenue Sharing program this week and shifted eligible creators over to the new Original Content Rewards system. If you’re still catching up on what changed and what it means for your payouts, here’s the straightforward breakdown without the corporate fluff.
The old Revenue Sharing program stopped accepting new signups back on August 7 and officially wrapped up on September 7. If you were enrolled in it, you received your final scheduled checks on August 14 and August 28. The very last payout — for any earnings you accrued through September 7 — is set to go out this Friday, September 11. After that, the old system is completely done.
Key date: If you were in Revenue Sharing and get approved for the new program, your first Original Content Rewards payout will hit on September 25.
So what’s replacing it? The Original Content Rewards program is X’s attempt to fix a couple of problems they saw with the old model. Under Revenue Sharing, a lot of creators figured out how to maximize ad payouts by reposting viral clips, scraping content from other platforms, or just baiting engagement without actually adding anything new. X wants to pivot toward rewarding people who actually film, write, report, or illustrate original work.
Under the new rules, “original” means you personally created the content. That includes self-filmed videos, your own photography, custom illustrations or graphic designs, and written threads that offer fresh reporting, analysis, or genuine commentary. If you’re reacting to something, they still want to see meaningful value added — not just a one-liner slapped on a reshare.
On the flip side, a lot of stuff that used to fly under Revenue Sharing won’t count anymore. Straight-up copies of other people’s posts, reposts from TikTok or YouTube without substantial editing, clips with just a filter or speed change, and threads that are clearly just engagement farming won’t qualify. Even if you put a little work into it, X is drawing a hard line against “minimally modified” content. Also, if your post picks up a helpful Community Note that corrects or contextualizes it, that can knock it out of eligibility too.
Beyond the content itself, you still need to meet X’s baseline thresholds to get in. You have to be at least 18 years old, live in a supported region, and hold an active Premium, Premium+, or Premium Business subscription. On top of that, you need at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 impressions from verified accounts on your posts over the last 90 days — and they only count Home Timeline views, not replies. If your account is currently paused from monetization because of a policy strike, you won’t be able to enroll until that’s cleared up.
Existing Revenue Sharing members started getting access to apply on September 8. To do it, just head into Creator Studio on X, find the Original Content Rewards section, and check your status. If you’ve already verified your ID and set up a payout method from the old program, you don’t need to go through that again. X says they typically make a decision within three business days. If they deny your application, you’re allowed one appeal. If that gets rejected too, you’ll have to wait 90 days before you can reapply.
Payouts under the new system will run every two weeks. The first general payout for early adopters went out on August 28. But for those of you coming over from Revenue Sharing who just applied this week, your first payment is scheduled for September 25. After that, it’ll follow the regular bi-weekly cadence.
How much you actually earn comes down to something X calls “qualified impressions.” They only count unique views from Premium subscribers — that includes Basic, Premium, Premium+, and Business tiers — and only when those views happen on the Home Timeline with at least 50% of your post visible on screen. They also filter out promoted views, bot traffic, and repeated views from the same account on the same post, so you can’t game it by spamming your own content.
So where does this leave creators practically? If you regularly produce your own videos, write in-depth threads, share original photography, or break down news with actual insight, this is probably a step in the right direction. The system is structured to pay you for bringing fresh, unique eyes to the platform. If you built your following by reposting other people’s work or throwing out low-effort engagement bait, your earnings will likely take a hit. That’s exactly what X is aiming for.
If you’re already eligible, the smart move is to get your application in as soon as possible so you don’t miss the September 25 payout window. If you’re not quite there yet — maybe you’re short on verified followers or impressions — focus on producing original stuff and building a real audience. The program isn’t going anywhere, and X seems committed to doubling down on this model for the foreseeable future.
