YouTube to Restrict Violent Video Game Content to Protect Young Viewers

YouTube has announced new rules that will tighten how violent video game footage is handled on the platform. The changes, which take effect on November 17, will introduce age restrictions for videos that show graphic or highly realistic violence involving human characters.

The company says the update is aimed at preventing younger users from being exposed to disturbing scenes, especially as modern video games now feature lifelike graphics that can make fictional violence appear real.

Under the previous policy, YouTube treated video game violence differently from real-life violence, allowing most gameplay videos to remain open to all viewers. However, that will now change. Videos may be age-restricted if they show acts like torture, mass killings, or prolonged scenes where realistic human suffering appears to be the main focus.

YouTube stated it will consider several factors before restricting a video, including how long the violent moment lasts and how intense or realistic it appears. Brief or non-focused violent scenes that are part of ordinary gameplay are unlikely to be affected. However, creators who include close-up or extended violent scenes may see their videos marked for adults only.

To avoid age restrictions, YouTube is advising content creators to blur or tone down graphic scenes before uploading. The company says the goal is to strike a balance between allowing gaming content and protecting children and teenagers from disturbing imagery.

In addition to the new violence rules, YouTube is also tightening its policies on gambling-related content. Videos that direct viewers to online gambling platforms through items such as game skins or NFTs will now face restrictions. Content that imitates casino-style games will also be limited to adult audiences.
