Vihiga County Woman Representative Dr. Beatrice Adagala has been elected Vice Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Africa Region. She will serve in this top continental role for a three-year term.
The announcement was made during the 54th Annual CPA Africa Conference held this week.
Kenya’s delegation to the conference, led by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Gladys Boss Shollei, congratulated Dr. Adagala, calling her election a sign of Kenya’s growing influence in parliamentary diplomacy across Africa.
“This is a proud moment for Kenya and a recognition of Dr. Adagala’s strong leadership and dedication,” Shollei said.
During the same elections, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Speaker of The Gambia National Assembly, was elected Chairperson of the CPA Africa Executive Committee, taking over from Rt. Hon. Catherine Gotani Hara, Speaker of the Parliament of Malawi.
In her outgoing remarks, Speaker Hara reflected on her three-year tenure and highlighted the successful “Women in Leadership” initiative, which helped achieve 30% female representation in CPA conferences across the region.
Delegates at the conference also adopted resolutions aimed at promoting stronger inter-parliamentary cooperation, good governance, youth and women’s leadership, and sustainable development through better legislation.
