    Buddy Hackett was born Leonard Hacker on August 31, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York.

    He was raised by his parents, Anna and Philip Hacker. His mother worked in the garment industry, while his father was a furniture upholsterer.

    As a child, Hackett developed Bell’s palsy, which affected his speech and facial expressions. Rather than holding him back, these characteristics became part of his signature comedic style.

    He attended New Utrecht High School, where he participated in drama productions and played varsity football. After graduating in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in an anti-aircraft unit during World War II.

    Comedy Career

    Hackett began entertaining audiences while still in high school, working as a tummler at Catskills resorts in New York.

    After military service, he continued performing stand-up comedy in clubs across New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and the famous Borscht Belt resorts.

    His energetic storytelling, quick wit, and unforgettable delivery soon made him one of America’s most popular nightclub comedians.

    Film Career

    Buddy Hackett began appearing in films during the early 1950s.

    His feature film debut came in Walking My Baby Back Home (1953), followed by a role in Fireman, Save My Child (1954), where he stepped in after Lou Costello became ill.

    Real Estate

    Hackett invested in several valuable properties during his lifetime.

    In 1952, he built a mansion in Beverly Hills, located across from the prestigious Los Angeles Country Club. Years after his death, the property attracted significant attention when his widow listed it for $18 million in 2020. It ultimately sold for approximately $13.35 million in 2021.

    The family also owned an oceanfront estate in Malibu spanning more than two acres. In 2005, Hackett’s widow sold the property for $4.825 million.

    Death

    Buddy Hackett died on June 30, 2003, at the age of 78 after battling heart disease.
