The Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP) has today revealed that it will be hosting servers of Akamai Technologies at the region’s only operational internet exchange point. Akamai currently delivers 15 to 30 per cent of the world’s web traffic reaching more than 15 Terabits per second.

At start, TESPOK expects the Akamai platform to offload a significant percentage of KIXP members’ traffic from expensive international transit connection points.

Commenting on Akamai’s move, KIXP CEO Fiona Asonga said,

Networks connecting to KIXP will be able to cross connect to the Akamai Intelligent Platform, Networks that wish to interconnect to Akamai for cloud services will benefit from Akamai intelligent platform that provides extensive reach, unmatched reliability, security, visibility and expertise .

Akamai’s membership at the KIXP has been made possible through the Wananchi Group who peer at the exchange Point and will be hosting content from the Akamai Intelligent Platform.

Christian Kaufmann, Senior Director of Network Services at Akamai said,

Our presence at the KIXP is an important milestone in Akamai’s platform expansion strategy in the region.  Thanks to network partnership with the Wananchi Group and the KIXP we are able to provide a better end-user experience to end users as they access local ‘Akamaized’ content instead of connecting to Europe.

Akamai Technologies now joins the 36 ISPs peering at KIXP. The exchange point peers 2 Kenyan government entities KRA and Government Information Services (GIS). KIXP is the fastest growing in the region.
