Angelique Kerber is a German former professional tennis player, born on January 18, 1988, in Bremen, West Germany.

She grew up primarily in Kiel and later established strong ties to Poland through her family roots.

Of Polish-German heritage, with dual citizenship, she has always competed for Germany and described her heart as beating for that country while maintaining close connections to Poland, including living and training in Puszczykowo.

A left-handed player known for her counter-punching style, athleticism, and consistency across surfaces, Kerber turned professional in 2003 at age 15.

She rose to become one of Germany’s most successful tennis players in the post-Steffi Graf era, reaching the pinnacle of the sport before retiring after the 2024 Paris Olympics following a maternity leave.

    Siblings

Angelique has one sibling, a sister named Jessica Kerber.

Jessica has largely stayed out of the spotlight of professional tennis but has remained a consistent source of private support for her sister throughout Angelique’s career.

Based in Kiel, Jessica works as a beauty consultant and Schönheitsberaterin, running her own business focused on supporting people in developing greater awareness, connection, and inner and outer beauty.

She has been involved in beauty services for years, and Angelique has publicly noted turning to her sister for manicures and pedicures when home.

    Career

Kerber began playing tennis at age three under the guidance of her father and developed her game while living near training facilities where her parents worked.

She made her professional debut in 2003 and steadily progressed through the ranks, though junior success was limited.

Her breakthrough came at the 2011 US Open, where, ranked outside the top 90, she reached the semifinals.

She claimed her first WTA title in 2012 and steadily climbed, cracking the top five that year.

Consistency defined much of her career: she won titles on hard, clay, and grass courts, compiled a strong match record, and spent years ranked among the world’s elite.

The peak arrived in 2016 with major titles and the world No. 1 ranking.

After periods of fluctuating form, a third Grand Slam in 2018, maternity leave following the birth of her daughter Liana in 2023, and a return in 2024, she announced that the Paris Olympics would mark the end of her professional career, concluding a more than two-decade journey on the tour with over 680 match wins and significant prize money earnings.

    Accolades

Kerber’s major achievements include three Grand Slam singles titles: the 2016 Australian Open (defeating Serena Williams in the final), the 2016 US Open, and the 2018 Wimbledon Championships (again defeating Serena Williams in the final).

She earned a silver medal in women’s singles at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

She ascended to the WTA world No. 1 ranking on September 12, 2016—the oldest player at the time to reach the top spot for the first time—and held it for 34 weeks, finishing that year as the year-end No. 1.

In total she captured 14 WTA singles titles.

Additional honors include WTA Player of the Year and ITF World Champion recognition in 2016, along with strong performances such as a runner-up finish at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships and consistent deep runs at major tournaments.
