President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday issued stringent containment measures for five counties which have been marked as disease infected areas. In his address, the head of state named Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado and Nakuru as the highly contagious counties. To combat the spread of Covid-19 the president placed the five counties under partial lockdown starting midnight (March 27) until further notice. Murang’a senator Irungu Kang’ata has contracted the Covid-19 virus for a second time in eight months. The immediate former majority whip in the senate is recuperating from home. This comes as the country grapples with the third wave that has had devastating effects in the last month. Deputy President William Ruto is yet to receive the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine which arrived in the country on March 3. Speaking to Radio Citizen on Thursday, the second in command reiterated the importance of receiving the jab but maintained that priority should be given to the healthcare workers in the frontline. 1,540 new Covid-19 cases were recorded on Wednesday from a sample size of 9,348, Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi has confirmed. The total number of cases has as a result risen to 124,707. The positivity rate is now at 16.5%. Of the new cases, 1,446 are Kenyans while 94 are foreigners. In terms of gender, 829 are males while 711 are females with the youngest being a six-month-old child and the oldest aged 110 years. 184 patients have recovered from the disease; 95 from home-based isolation care while 89 are from various health facilities. Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) were up in arms after Kisumu county “askaris” or best known as “kanjo” were caught on tape dragging a woman on a moving vehicle. Reports indicate that the victim is a hawker. Nyamira County government may have paid ghost workers Sh2.8 billion in the 2018/19 Financial Year, Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has revealed. The audit report shows that the executive hired some 736 officers and paid them outside the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Database system. Kenya on Tuesday recorded 1,127 new cases of Covid-19 from a sample size of 5,393, Health CAS Dr Rashid Aman has confirmed. The new positive cases push the tally to 123,167. Thus far, Kenya’s positivity rate is 22.1%. Recoveries have risen to 90,586 after 210 patients were discharged. 110 are from home-based and isolation care while 100 are from various health facilities. 1,090 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide while 3,224 patients are on home-based isolation and care. 135 patients are in ICUs, 34 of whom are on ventilatory support and 93 on supplemental oxygen. 25 other…

Referral hospitals will soon reject walk-in patients, the government has said. This was after Health CS Mutahi Kagwe announced a planned upgrade of hospitals in informal parts of Nairobi. The hospitals, he said, will operate round the clock. 24-hour services, the minister said, will help decongest referral hospitals like the Kenyatta National and Referral Hospital, Mama Lucy, Mbagathi, and Kenyatta University. “Consequently, in three months’ time, when round-the-clock services are available at these facilities, it will no longer be possible to serve walk-in patients at any of the designated referral facilities,” CS Kagwe said during the opening of Lang’ata Health…
