Police and Kenya Wildlife Service officials arrested three suspects with 85.7 kilos of elephant tusks worth Sh8 million along Garsen-Witu Road in Tana River County. The arrests were made on Friday September 20 in an operation staged following reports the three were selling the tusks. The three include a woman and were carrying two elephant tusks that had been chopped into pieces and tucked into two sacks, officials said. A multi-agency security team Thursday recovered bomb making materials in an operation in Alango Warba within Garissa County. The three al shabaab militants who had the materials fled when they heard the multi-agency security team was approaching, leaving behind IED making materials including TNT explosives, grenades, command wires, wristwatch, tester, and other assorted equipment, police said. Police are investigating an incident in which an American national collapsed and died at a Nairobi hotel as he checked out.  Dwaraka Mirmira, 86, with American passport collapsed and died as he was checking out of the Pan Afric Hotel in Nairobi on Wednesday September 18. Police in Homa Bay are investigating an incident in which a University of Nairobi lecturer died by suicide at his home in Kachola Village, Kodera South Location, in Rachuonyo South Sub-County. Police said the body of Dr Samwel Owino Mwanda was found dangling from a tree at his compound on Thursday September 19. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) added new East African words and phrases in its September 2024 update, among them ‘panya route’ and ‘kitu kidogo’. Former Rift Valley regional police commander Fredrick Ochieng is the new traffic commandant for the National Police Service. This follows changes that were made Thursday September 19 by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat. Ochieng had been sent to the National Counter Terrorism Centre since March 2022. He swapped positions with the outgoing commandant Mary Omari.
