A man has been arrested on suspicion of 76 murders after telling a public inquiry he started last August’s deadly fire in a Johannesburg building. The 29-year-old confessed while giving evidence at the inquiry, police said. Last year fire gutted the Usindiso building in Marshalltown, where many poor people were living, claiming 77 lives and leaving many injured. The tragedy highlighted the issue of buildings abandoned or neglected by their owners in South Africa. A man allegedly shot and killed his wife and their three daughters in a domestic violence incident at their suburban Illinois home, but spared his 19-year-old son, who witnessed the slayings, according to authorities. Maher Kassem allegedly shot his wife and three daughters “during a verbal argument” at their home in Tinley Park around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to police in Tinley Park, about 30 miles south of Chicago. Turkish MPs Tuesday ratified Sweden’s bid to join Nato in a long-delayed vote that represents a big step forward on the Nordic nation’s path to membership. Sweden applied to join in 2022 after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but Turkey withheld approval amid a row over what it called Sweden’s support to Kurdish separatists. Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Tuesday held discussions with visiting Commander of United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) General Michael Langley at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi. The Israeli army says 24 of its soldiers were killed in Gaza on Monday – the deadliest day for its forces since their ground operation began. That includes 21 reservists who died in an explosion likely caused by mines that Israeli forces had placed in two buildings to demolish them, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said. It is thought a missile fired by Palestinian armed fighters hit a tank near the buildings. The IDF is investigating what happened. A man was arrested and charged with harassment and stalking near Taylor Swift’s New York home. David Crowe, 33, from Seattle, was arrested on Monday after complaints about an “emotionally disturbed male acting erratically”. He was charged with two counts each of harassment and stalking, New York Police Department said. The incident comes days after Swift’s house appeared to have been the target of an attempted break-in. Heavily armed bandits shot dead one National Police Reservist (NPR) in Graton village, Laikipia North Sub-county in an attack on Monday.  The attack also left five nursing serious injuries. Laikipia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri, said security officers were ambushed as they were pursuing the bandits, after they raided the homestead of Andrew Maina Murugu, and made away with nine cows that were later recovered. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) detectives arrested two Nairobi County officials over claims of corruption. The officials include the Officer-In-Charge of the Data Office at St. Peter Cleavers Revenue offices in Starehe Sub-County, and a student attached at the said revenue office as an Intern. The two were arrested for involvement in diversion of county revenue through manipulation of the Nairobi Revenue Services portal to fraudulently reflect full payment. The Supreme Court lived up to its communique after refusing to hear Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi on Tuesday morning. Ahmednasir, who was banned from ever appearing before Apex Court on January 18, had gone to court to defend a family against the late President Daniel Moi’s family in a dispute over Sh2 billion land. The killer of a woman whose head was found in a dam in Kiambaa, Kiambu County tied a stone on it to ensure it sank. This was probably aimed at ensuring the head would not be found, police revealed.
