Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has named Esther Ngari managing director for the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). Ngari has been holding the position on an interim basis since May. Israel’s military has updated the number of people it believes are being held hostage in Gaza – up from 155 to 199. They were kidnapped when Hamas gunmen infiltrated Israel just over a week ago, killing more than 1,400 people. Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general Collins Oyuu was Monday involved in a road accident in Kisumu County. Oyuu’s vehicle is said to have overturned near Kombewa on the Bondo-Kisumu route. According to Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer RTEO Allan Mwangi, the driver was avoiding a cyclist as he rushed to catch a flight at Kisumu International Airport. Mr Mwangi told reporters that both Oyuu and his driver escaped unhurt. The cyclist, however, sustained injuries. Further investigations are underway.

At least 12 Democratic Republic of Congo nationals were at the weekend arrested in Kapsabet Town for being in the country illegally. The aliens were produced in court and an order was issued to take them to Ugandan authorities and Kakuma refugee camp. This follows their request. A couple was arrested after an autopsy on the body of a five-year-old boy showed he was tortured in his home in Naivasha. The postmortem was don on Saturday October 14 at the Naivasha Sub County Hospital and showed the boy had injuries on the head, testicles, and both legs caused by soft tissue trauma. A new earthquake has hit western Afghanistan – several days after two large tremors in the region killed more than 1,000 people. The US Geological Survey (USGS) says the magnitude 6.3 quake was near the city of Herat. It was at a depth of 6.3 (four miles). So far there have been no reports of any casualties.
