The remains of 28 of 32 Kenyans, who were killed in the Ethiopian Airline’s crash, have finally been flown home seven months after the tragedy. An Ethiopian Airline plane carrying the fragments of the deceased landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Monday morning. The Kenyans were among 157 passengers who perished during the March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash near the town of Bishoftu, southeast of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Standard Group on Monday pulled down a story highlighting an alleged property row in former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s home. In the story, the media outlet reported that Ida, Odinga’s wife, is embroiled in a bitter property dispute with her daughter-in-law, Lwam Getachew Bekele, the widow of Odinga’s son, Fidel, who died in 2015. A middle-aged man died on Sunday in Kibra constituency after falling from a moving car in the convoy of ODM candidate Imran Okoth. The man, who has been identified as Nick Odhiambo, was hanging on a moving Toyota Prado when he fell off and was ran over by other speeding cars in the convoy. A section of Jubilee lawmakers has called for the disqualification of Imran Okoth, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party candidate in Kibra by-election, over recent attacks on McDonald Mariga. Investigations into the Likoni Ferry tragedy have begun with detectives training their guns on circumstances that led to the death Mariam Kighenda and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu after their car slid off the ferry and plunged into the Indian ocean two weeks ago. Passenger and cargo carrier Air Afrik has announced plans to lay off 80 per cent of its employees as part of the company’s restructuring process. The move that will take effect in November will see at least 200 airline’s employees in Kenya and South Sudan sent home. According to the airline, the management arrived at the decision following the loss of a Ksh2 billion plane-leasing contract with the government of South Sudan. Eleven General Service Unit (GSU) officers died on Saturday after a police vehicle they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Garissa County. In a statement on Saturday evening, Inspector of Police Hillary Mutyambai confirmed that the officers, from Harehare GSU camp, were on patrol along Damajale Harehare road near the Kenya Somali border when the vehicle ran over the IED at around 5.30pm. The High Court on Friday temporary suspended the impeachment of Taita Governor Granton Samboja. In a conservatory order issued by Justice James Makau, the county assembly speaker was barred from submitting to the Senate the resolution recommending the impeachment of the governor. The assembly was set to notify the Senate on Samboja’s impeachment where senators have to approve the move to send him home. The ill-fated vehicle in the Likoni ferry tragedy has finally been retrieved from the Indian ocean. The vehicle with registration number KCB 289C was secured by divers from the Kenyan Navy at around noon and was lifted from the sea a few minutes past 4pm. The vehicle contains the bodies of Mariam Kighenda and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu. Deputy President William Ruto on Friday reiterated that the Jubilee party has no preferred candidate in the 2022 race to State House. Social media giant, Facebook, has scaled up its efforts to curb the spread of fake news by extending its Third-Party Fact-Checking programme to 10 additional African countries. Facebook announced on Tuesday that it will be partnering with four independent fact-checking organizations in the counties to curb misinformation. They are; Agence France-Presse (AFP), the France 24 Observers, Pesa Check and Dubawa. The programme will be available in Ethiopia, Zambia, Somalia and Burkina Faso in partnership with AFP. As concerns of the quality of health services offered at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) increase by the day, it has now emerged that the hospital lost at least Ksh30 million to rogue suppliers. Reports indicate that the biggest referral hospital in the country got into a contract with three different companies —- Glotex Medical Kenya Ltd, High Voltage Communication Ltd and Microtec Office Supplies — which later failed to deliver, despite receiving down payments.
