Gusii leaders have begun to rally young people to register as voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

They said the youth can no longer afford to be bystanders but be destiny shaper’s by participating in the shaping the country’s future through the ballot.

“We cannot afford to sit back while decisions are made for us, you have better bargaining chances in a democratic process through voting” said Kisii Governor aspirant Dr Enock Ondari.

He said it is especially momentous for Gusii as a region because they would have Fred Matiangi at the ballot for the presidency.

“The power lies in your vote, and it starts by acquiring a voter’s card. That is the only way to have a voice in matters that affect our country and community,” stated Ondari on Friday during a burial in Etono, Bomachoge Chache.

He said constant voter apathy ,especially among young people, has continued to contribute to poor leadership and lack of development in some regions in the country.

At Tuki Ya Mwana in Nyacheki, Ondari urged the residents not to wait until it’s too late to get voter cards.

“Don’t just complain about bad leadership on social media—get your voter card, and vote for change,” he stated.

Former Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ongera echoed similar sentiments saying Kenyans would have this rare opportunity to determine their destiny adding that having a voter card was crucial.

“Yes, we may be talking that we have our son Fred Matiangi but without cards we cannot get anywhere,” she said.

She was speaking at Etono, Bomachoge Chache during a burial event.

County Senator Richard Onyonka, called on young people to take the lead in deciding the leaders they want.

“We have seen the youth mobilize around music, sports, and social media. That same energy should be directed toward civic action. Registering as a voter is the first step toward demanding accountability,” he said.

He urged parents and educators to support the voter registration drive by encouraging dialogue on governance and leadership.

“Only by voting would you have a direct say on the governance of this state. We may not eternally seek voice through streets protests . If you don’t vote, someone else will decide for you,” he said.

Kisii Governor Simba Arati ,on Saturday, also called on young people across the county to take an active role in shaping their future by registering as voters ahead of the next general election.

Arati emphasized the critical role the youth play in determining leadership and governance through the ballot.

“Your voice matters, and the strongest way to express it is through your vote,” said Arati. “We need young people to rise up, take charge, and be part of the decision-making process.”

He was speaking a function in Nyamache Friday.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already rolled out mass voter registration drive with officials reporting a dismal turnout.

The Gusii region, comprising Kisii and Nyamira counties, holds significant political weight and has often played a swing role in national politics.
