Bernd Karbacher is a German retired professional tennis player born on 3 April 1968 in Munich, West Germany.
He played right-handed with a two-handed backhand and resided in Munich throughout much of his life.
He turned professional in 1989 and competed on the ATP Tour until his retirement in 2000, amassing career prize money of over US$2 million.
Known for his competitive spirit on clay and hard courts, Karbacher achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 22 on 17 April 1995 and a doubles ranking of No. 163.
After retiring from playing, he worked as a tour coach, player advisor, and later as a performance coach and sports speaker, drawing on experiences from his career to mentor others.
Siblings
Bernd has an older brother named Michael Karbacher.
Michael previously served as a coach with the German Tennis Federation and later worked for the tennis equipment company Babolat.
Career
Karbacher began his professional journey in the late 1980s, initially competing in Challenger events and satellites.
He secured his first Challenger title in Hong Kong in 1991.

The following year marked a breakthrough when he claimed his first ATP Tour singles title at the Cologne Open on clay, defeating Marcos Ondruska in the final, and entered the top 50 for the first time.
In 1993 he reached the semifinals of the Hamburg Masters, notching a notable win over Boris Becker, and captured a doubles title in Schenectady alongside Andrei Olhovskiy.
His strongest season came in 1994, when he won the Swedish Open in Båstad by beating Horst Skoff in the final and advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open after defeating Ivan Lendl.
That year he also contributed to Germany’s victory in the World Team Cup and made his Davis Cup debut.
In 1995 he reached a career-high ranking of No. 22 and advanced to the final of the Indianapolis tournament after upsetting world No. 2 Pete Sampras in the semifinals, though he fell to Thomas Enqvist in the championship match.
The next year he produced another strong Grand Slam run, reaching the French Open quarterfinals with a win over Goran Ivanišević.
Karbacher continued competing into the late 1990s, recording additional upsets such as a first-round victory over Australian Open champion Petr Korda at the 1998 US Open while ranked outside the top 150.
He represented Germany in Davis Cup ties against Russia in 1994 and 1995, finishing with a 1-2 singles record, and partnered with Anke Huber at the 1994 Hopman Cup.
Overall he compiled a 135–161 singles record and a 21–23 doubles record on the main tour before retiring in 2000.
Accolades
Among his principal achievements, Karbacher won two ATP singles titles, Cologne in 1992 and the Swedish Open in Båstad in 1994, and one ATP doubles title in Schenectady in 1993.
He reached one additional singles final at Indianapolis in 1995. His best Grand Slam results were quarterfinal appearances at the 1994 US Open and the 1996 French Open.
He attained a career-high singles ranking of world No. 22 and helped Germany claim the 1994 World Team Cup title.
Karbacher also participated in the Davis Cup and Hopman Cup for his country, and his career earnings exceeded US$2 million.
