The mother of late gospel singer Betty Bayo is seeking the institution of an inquest into the death of her daughter.

Bayo, a leading gospel artist died on November 10, 2025, at the Kenyatta National Hospital, where the family said she had been receiving treatment.

Then, a family spokesperson, in the company of the singer’s husband, Hiram Gitau, said she had succumbed to leukaemia.

Bayo’s mother, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua wrote to the Director of Public Prosecution, requesting an inquest into her death.

Through Omenke Andeje and Company Advocates, Wairimu said the family suspects an evil hand in the death of the 11th Hour hitmaker.

She argued that Bayo had never exhibited any illness and that she died mysteriously. She also alluded to events after her death, saying the family was denied an autopsy report and that she was hurriedly buried to conceal some facts that may have led to her death.

Wairimu further said that the family was denied medical records and information about what the deceased was being treated for.

“The family thus express their utmost disdain, and thus demands that you hereby direct the Inspector General to urgently move with speed and institute an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua -alias Betty Bayo,” reads a letter to the DPP.

When announcing her death on November 10, the family representative, in the company of her husband Gitau said Bayo suffered excessive bleeding before her demise.

“The doctors tried to do their best, but the will of God has prevailed,” the representative said.

The artist was later buried at her rural home in Kiambu.
