How Conor McGregor Built His Fortune

McGregor’s financial success is largely attributed to his historic fights, particularly his highly publicized boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017, which earned him approximately $100 million. His bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018 brought in another $50 million, while the April 2021 sale of his Proper No. Twelve whiskey brand contributed $200 million in pre-tax earnings.

According to reports, McGregor’s career earnings from fighting alone stand at $235 million. Notably, between 2015 and 2016, he earned $25 million from UFC fights. His income surged between June 2018 and June 2019, where he made $47 million from salary, fight purses, and endorsements.

    Early Life

Conor Anthony McGregor was born on July 14, 1988, in Crumlin, Ireland. As a child, he excelled in sports, particularly soccer, but by the age of 12, he began training in boxing. In 2006, McGregor started a plumbing apprenticeship, during which he met fighter Tom Egan, who introduced him to MMA.

Initially trained in boxing, McGregor expanded his skillset under John Kavanagh, Ireland’s first Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. He also trained in Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Capoeira, and Kickboxing before turning professional in MMA.

    Rise to UFC Stardom

McGregor made his MMA debut in 2007 at the age of 18, winning by TKO in the first round. His professional career kicked off in March 2008 with another TKO victory against Gary Morris. Despite suffering an early career loss, McGregor continued fighting and eventually caught the attention of UFC President Dana White.

In 2013, White visited Dublin and was bombarded by local fans urging him to sign McGregor. After a meeting, White and then-UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta quickly signed McGregor to the UFC. He debuted on April 6, 2013, defeating Marcus Brimage via knockout in just over a minute.

McGregor’s rise in the UFC was meteoric. He won key fights against Max Holloway in 2013, suffered an ACL injury that sidelined him for ten months, and returned in 2014 to secure more victories. By 2015, he was one of the biggest stars in the UFC.

    McGregor’s Biggest UFC Paydays

McGregor’s ability to generate massive PPV buys and fight purses made him one of the highest-paid fighters in MMA history. His biggest UFC paydays include:

    • July 11, 2015 – Earned $3.285 million for defeating Chad Mendes at UFC 189.
    • December 11, 2015 – Earned $4.5 million for knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds.
    • March 5, 2016 – Earned $5.6 million against Nate Diaz at UFC 196.
    • August 20, 2016 – Earned another $5.6 million in the Diaz rematch at UFC 202.
    • November 12, 2016 – Earned $7 million after defeating Eddie Alvarez to become a two-division champion.
    • October 6, 2018 – Earned $50 million against Khabib Nurmagomedov.
    • January 18, 2020 – Earned a record $5 million for his fight against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, with potential earnings of up to $80 million including PPV sales.

McGregor’s highly anticipated rematch with Dustin Poirier on January 23, 2021, guaranteed him another $5 million, but his loss ended a potential massive payday from a future rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

    Floyd Mayweather Fight Earnings

McGregor’s most lucrative fight came on August 26, 2017, when he faced Floyd Mayweather in a crossover boxing match. The fight, which generated 4.3 million PPV buys, earned McGregor a guaranteed $30 million. With bonuses, merchandise sales, and endorsements, his total take-home from the fight exceeded $100 million.

Had McGregor defeated Mayweather, he could have earned $200-$300 million in a rematch. Despite the loss, his performance and marketability skyrocketed, leading to increased endorsement deals with Burger King, Beats by Dre, and Anheuser-Busch, among others.

    $600 Million Whiskey Empire

In September 2018, McGregor launched Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey in Ireland and the United States. The brand quickly became a commercial success. In 2020, Proximo Spirits (owners of Jose Cuervo tequila) bought a 49% stake in the company for $250 million.

    Road House Movie Salary

Beyond fighting and business, McGregor ventured into Hollywood. He starred opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2024 Prime Video reboot of “Road House”, for which he was paid over $5.5 million. He made headlines for surpassing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s record of $5.5 million for “The Mummy Returns” (2001) as the highest salary for an athlete in a first-time acting role.

    Personal Life

McGregor has been in a long-term relationship with Dee Devlin since 2008, and the couple has three children. He remains deeply connected to his Irish roots and is known for his lavish lifestyle, often flaunting expensive cars, watches, and custom suits.
